Barry the bird boggler  shouldn't they also retire the no. 4 as that was Parky's and Senior/Blackman/Friday tended to wear the no. 9, Horrix the no. 10 and Steve Death wore no. 1....

You forgot Gilkesy's no.7 shirt! (Or no.11 for his earlier days)...

W&E Royal I think if a player dies when on the clubs books then it should be ok, such as Marc Vivian Foe and Ray Jones
Certainly retire it for a season or two as it would be unfair to give it to another player stepping into the team but don't retire it for good unless a pattern of player deaths starts emerging that suggests the shirt is cursed

How about the opposite of this.......make every player that joins the club and wants the no.2 shirt to change their surname to 'Murty' so the shirt will always carry the name of our legendary captain....... -

...I'll get my coat.

Give it to whoever is going to be right back this season, unless they've already got a squad number and want to keep it (ie Rosenoir).

One thing I hate about squad numbers is seeing the likes of the fella at Arsenal (Diarby is it) wearing the number 2 and playing upfront or in the middle of the park whilst someone like Sidwell used to where the number 9 at Chelsea.

Absolutely no reason for it but I hate seeing numbers of position!

...as for retiring a number, as others have rightly pointed out, that's just a load of rubbish.

Let's retire a number to represent the fans. Maybe number 12 or if that is taken number 13. Actually, scratch that idea. Too fookin American for my taste.

Thaumagurist* Retiring shirts is so lame and so American.

Huntley & Palmer I'm sorry, hadn't realised Reading FC were like an ice hockey or basketball team. oxf*rd sake

What are you on about? It might not happen in this country, but Boca Juniors retired the number 10 shirt ages ago. They're neither American (in the sense that Spacey meant) nor an ice hockey team. There are plenty more examples that I can't be bothered to root out.

Perhaps, but I bet they borrowed the idea from USA.

Maybe we talk to Murty about wearing the number 2 in his testimonial and dying sometime towards the end of the match. Then we could retire it with credit.

Anything else is just yank

Basically football should be played in shirts numbered 1-11 and it's only commercialism that has changed this. North American sports don't have such a problem as you can pretty much choose any number from 0 to 99 to wear and as some players become synonymous with that number then it actually makes sense to retire that number, although fittingly some legendary numbers are more coveted by current players (cf #23) Having said that in some spheres such as college sports retirement of numbers has got stupid, witness Kevin Durant's number being retired by Texas after a single season in college prior to going pro.

The fact is no football player will ever have such an impact as to lead to their number being retired (Bobby Moore possibly the closest yet), and Murts certainly won't be the man to start the trend

To be fair it is more the fans desire to see player names on shirts. That is much easier if the player wears the same number each week and no 2 players in the same team wear the same number.

I want our reserve goalkeeper to wear the number 13 shirt, i hate having it "for the fans" it's gay. I detest that Hunty got the 10 shirt and i also hated it when Adie Williams wore the 8 shirt.

While we're at it, can we get rid of Tom Hark?

Do the players of other teams wear no. 13? I can't remember any.

Where do you sit with regards to central midfielders wearing the number 4?

If I was to list shirts for positions for a 4-4-2 layout I would go with the following

     1
2  5  6  3
7  4  8  11
   9  10

Why? It is a good many years since a shirt number equated to a position on the pitch. These days there are so many different variations of formations that a 1-11 line-up wouldn't necessarily give a clue as to the position in which you can expect a player to play. Besides which, squad numbering assists the crowd in identifying individual players, thus making it far easier to be abusive to - I dunno - Jon Macken for instance.

Ps. LOL @ 'Ritire'. Is english your second language?
