You seem to be having some problems keeping this debate civil.

Take a step back. You are criticising a player for waving his arms around a few times, and getting frustrated on a small number of occasions with this team-mates.

Given Guthrie played his role very well in the hour he was on the pitch (although his performance dropped off a bit after the goal, as with everyone else’s) – on the whole he was one of our better players, it seems bizarre to take his apparently being a bit disillusioned a couple of times as ‘a terrible attitude’, ‘a lack of mental strength’ and to say that he ‘couldn’t be arsed’.

He made a mistake. It was dealt with. Guthrie doesn’t deserve the bar raised so high relative to his team-mates, in any sense.

im never civil to you!
i already said he was our best player in that one game. as well as in the stoke game at the start of the season. did exactly what we bought him for

regarding the rest of the season
firstly- any player who refused to play would elicit the same response from me.
secondly- once punished i welcome him back with open arms
3rdly to keep those arms open he must play well when he plays, not mouth off to the press negatively, not have a go at other players in every game, and produce some moments of quality in games that positively influence results.

when he does so ill say so, the same as when he doesnt.
and the same as anyone else

play well when he plays - he's been alright
not mouth off to the press negatively - when did he do this?
not have a go at other players in every game - pretty sure that's football
and produce some moments of quality in games that positively influence results - he's made a few chances that weren't capitalised upon.

But fair enough.

AirRaidSiren Saints scored in the 34th minute and the entire team's shoulders slumped and lost their confidence. It's not just Guthrie that does bad things or oxf*rd all, but there is nearly an entire thread slating the guy for doing the same as the rest of the squad, and thats lose their bottle.

Let's all pick on Guthrie because he done a naughty thing.

You couldn't make it up.

The Guthrie jibes are chiefly aimed at those who beat McD up about the player's exclusion from the team as if he was the missing piece of the jigsaw. He hasn't been and he isn't.

Still, "we've got a new manager now and things are already better".

My word, you really do have a chip on your shoulder with Guthrie, don't you?

I don't think the majority of the fans 'beat up McDermott' solely on the exclusion of Guthrie, I think they beat him up about his whole management of the team, the selections and tactics, not just focused on one player, where you have turned it all around onto one player..hence your continuation of the WAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! about Guthrie.

He isn't the 'missing piece of the jigsaw', he is part of it and as far as McDermott was concerned, he became a lost piece due to McDermott's pig headedness, after all, his team 'were good enough'.

As for people saying things are better already under Adkins, would you kindly show me, us, where they are saying this?? Things aren't any better yet, but they sure hell will be in the near future.

Pick your lip off the floor.

For Guthrie, see Caskey 10-11 years prior. Has the ability to be the best player in the squad, but lacks the application. Caskey did eventually came good when he got his ass in gear, lost some weight and got his head right.

Doesn't matter how good one player is, the team won't perform if he unsettles the squad.
One of my old football managers said players are like apples. One rotten one and you lose the whole lot. He dropped a couple of guys who were clearly better than the rest of us, and we played better and got better results.
When someone f*cks up, the first person the realise this is the guy who's f*cked up. You don't need reminding from some twat with stupid hair that you shouldn't have sliced your clearance off for a throw in!
From what i've read, Guthrie seems like a total ego maniac who thinks he's bigger and better than the club. If this is true, i'll be glad to see the back of him come the summer.
I wouldn't be surprised if his influence over Pearce has caused his situation either.
Oh, and i agree that smiling next to some kid in the shop doesn't mean he's a good guy who's committed to the club.
To cut a long story short... Feck off Guthrie, you're a twat and no one likes you, and you've got stupid hair.

play well when he plays
- he's been alright
- but i dont expect him to be as good as our other midfielders. i expect him to be better.
- ok, but personally I don't expect a player to come in and be 'better' instantly. I think they need to time to settle and a decent run, which I don't think he has been afforded, for reasons other than his own personal performance.

not mouth off to the press negatively
- when did he do this?
- if not that- then dont be stupid enough to give quotes the press are bound to pick up on as negative
- Players/managers get caught out all the time and I didn't see anything that bad that wasn't exaggerated or 'read in to' by those with an agenda

not have a go at other players in every game
- pretty sure that's football
- noticed him doing it in every game. i like players geeing each other up, but he just looks negative and aggressive when he does it. to me.
- Not noticed this personally, but then I haven't been singling him out for attention

and produce some moments of quality in games that positively influence results
- he's made a few chances that weren't capitalised upon
- yes, like i said he did in that last game, i was pleased to see it, thats kind of what i want in most games from him though.
- I think he has and probably would do more, given a run in the side

But fair enough. yes. Indeed.

if a player is supposed to be better as reflected by his wages, and thinks/acts like hes better- then i demand he be better. damnit

this may be, and i hope so, but how many games in which he achieves bugger all would you keep playing him for until he gets used to his team mates etc?

What is his longest run of league starts this season?

I remember back in September you were stating that you wouldn't drop Federici even if he made mistakes in three consecutive games. And that's a key position.

I'd say given our lack of any real alternative as a passing midfielder, but given Akpan's potential in this area, a run of 8-10 starts in the side for Guthrie would give us a true indication of what he can contribute to the team.

So far we have average against Arsenal, and very good against Southampton. Not a bad start.

Yes all we need now are a team on the same wavelength as him and he might look consistently good. But then didn't we say the same about Matejovsky....
