Maguire
Hoop Blah I don't think anyone's excusing Guthrie's behaviour

Well clearly they are.

Peter Odemwingie got booed last night when came on for West Brom. If that had been at Reading you'd all have sung his name and talked about how "he could bring the goals we need".

I wouldn't necessarily say Guthrie got dropped for playing well either - that's pure revisionism in my mind. He played "okay" at best. In fact the second half against WBA was the first time he ever looked worth his salary IMHO.

I think people recognise that Guthrie was messed about and had a point about a) the way we were playing and b) that he should have been playing as he was sitting on the bench watching inferior midfielders under perform. He did wrong in refusing to play. He got punished, he's apologised, his commitment to the cause has always seemed genuine to me and he's back in the side, showing he's one of our best midfielders and performing well.

So to me it's chalked down as stupid and wrong, but with some provocation. Ultimately done and dusted, so best forgiven and forgotten for now.

i get it affected him. im saying its unproffesional to have let it affect him that much.
hes a footballer. managers ask you to do whatever job they think is best for the team, and you do it. the end.

What, even if you're a 5'7" striker and the manager tells you to get some gloves because you're playing in goal?

And he did do it (Sunderland aside - and thats not the bit we're discussing).

The point I'm making is that his poor performances and mistakes during games are significantly impacted by the role he's asked to perform.

He was asked to play out of position and in a way that wasn't natural to him and wasn't playing to his strengths. He did it anyway. He didn't perform as well doing it as he is now when being asked to play in his more accustomed way.

Blimey there are a lot of Guthrie apologists on this board.

My favourite chant of the season was the rendition of Where's Your Head At? whilst Guthrie was warming up against Crawley.

I guess some people just think he's a good player and want to convince the rest that his past mistakes aren't worth beating him up for anymore.

Although that makes me a Guthrie apologist apologist.

I am a Guthrie apologist detractor, but I was pleased with his performance at Fulham. 46 games of that kind of form next season and he might even become a fans favourite

It would take the person they were arguing against on here to DIE before anyone could possibly change their mind shame-free.

I wonder whether the British Criminal Justice system has had its first message board-rel8ed murder yet?

Ps. this is not a threat.....I don't want to be done for incitement to football message board-rel8ed murder.....

I think he can be a decent player too. Doesn't make Brian McDermott Satan for sticking his pikey backside on the bench after he didn't play particularly well.

No one's said McDermott was wrong to punish him for that.

The criticisms are that he was misusing him before that. Dropped him before that when he was clearly one of our better midfielders and the way forward. Continued not to play him or bring him on as a sub despite the fact the rest of midfield was playing terribly. And then continued not to play him effectively after the punishment was complete. Then played him in January, got better performances from him and the team, then dropped him again and went back to crap ways without any real justification.

Cheers!!! :D Explains all the weird post it notes I find every morning saying things like 'Guthrie wonderful' 'W*nker BM not playing him' and 'Sunderland strop', so what was this all about again?

I do have this horrible feeling that this thread has a few pages to go yet.

You might as well get used to it, this board is going to be groundhog day every day until we actually sign somebody in circa the first week of July.
