If RFC are offered the reputed £8m asking price they will - obviously - accept it, if not you have to bear in mind the fact that his contract doesn't expire until the end of the forthcoming season and there is the January transfer window to take into consideration - we are all aware that player prices in that period tend to be rather inflated compared to now.

IMHO and with all other posts considered I think that if RFC do not get the asking price they want and Long isn't THAT keen to go now -which I don't believe he is- he will probably stay until January when - as someone has already stated- there will premiership teams who haven't made the best start to their season that could be more amenable to the current asking price.

Or he may sign a contract extension for another year - if he has another 25 goal season this season, next season he could well be on his way to commanding the biggest transfer fee in the Championships history never mind just Readings..........this would be my preference of course.

If we can get another 25 goal season then he may stay longer and play for us in the Prem.

That's mighty fine confidence you have in our defence, Snowball, especially given the current "state" of it.

Surely you mean't 'if shane stays and IF he stay's fit, he MIGHT get 25 goals and we might get promoted'.

No Fixed Abode Good move if he goes to West Brom. He'll do good under Woy.

£7m +Simon Cox would be nice

£4m + Cox would be excellent.

£2million plus Cox would be good enough.

How much are we saying Cox is worth in these deals?

The chance of Long staying and getting 25 goals and us not getting promoted is pretty slim. Shirley not worth the effort?

High scoring strikers don't guarantee promotion (Graham, Becchio, Gradel, Sharp etc.)

You forgot the most obvious one: Long.

The point being the chances of getting to the circumstances where the bet is relevant are very slim.

But who was our second highest scorer last season? Ian Harte? If we are to rely on Shane for 25+, we need another striiker to weigh in with 15 or so. Then throw Harte's 10 or so into the hat and who knows. But much does depend upon how mean the defence is.

Despite only really getting back to full match fitness and claiming a regular starting place more than quarter of the way through the season.

If we keep Shane, I'm optimistic he'll have more support in terms of weighing in next season. Nunt is starting fully fit and getting in a pre-season. Manset looks slimmer and is being worked on by both the fitness and coaching teams. Maybe we'll see Church fulfill some of his 09/10 promise.

Whether that's enough to fill Long's shoes if he leaves is a different matter altogether.
