MATCHWATCH : Rotherham United (a) sponsored by Dick Habbin

by Sutekh » 11 Dec 2018 12:45

When : Saturday 15th December, 3pm
Where : New York Stadium, New York Way, Rotherham, S60 1AH
Capacity : 12,021
Away Stand : Mears Stand at one end of the stadium
What might I see in the area : the north

This is going to be a very long way to go to come home with nothing. Not that it’s not a long way anyway of course but it’ll seem an interminable journey not have at least a point at the end of it all. Trouble is without Meite or a Bodvarsson about Reading’s attack really is far too lightweight and poses little or no presence or threat.

Now it may also be the first game for Reading’s new manager whether that be Jokanovic, Parkinson, Ainsworth or someone completely different. If it is then they’re not likely to have any answers ready in the day or two they would have to see the squad and read the scouting reports but they might be able to trigger the famous “new manager effect” that’ll at least see the team put in a worthy performance. It might also add 2 or 3 extra away followers to the gate esp. if it’s Parky.

Rotherham are struggling too but then that’s what they do at this level so they are well used to fighting and scrapping for everything. Their current form looks awful on first glance with just 1 win their last 14 league games but that is slightly misleading as they’ve managed to draw 9 of those 14 games so this lot are extremely difficult to beat and they have only been beaten once in the last 9 and that was away at Norwich. So just the sort of team Reading will be wanting to face then.

No changes are known on the injury front but hopefully Meite might be back. I’m really not expecting to see Moore and O’Shea so the defence will once again get to pick itself.

Referee

New ref alert. Ross Joyce steps up for the challenge in his first ever Reading game – and also, form what I can see, his first game at Division 2/Championship level.

Historically

This will be the 23rd league game with Rotherham in Rotherham. Of those games Reading have won 5 and lost 9 with 8 drawn. There has only been 1 goalless draw to date so expectation is there should be some form of net rippling happening on Saturday afternoon for Reading.

Since Rotherham moved a little bit down the road from Millmoor to their nice new shiny plastic arena Reading have won 1, drawn 1 and lost 1 but always managed to score. Think that particular record might be a bit of a challenge to maintain given the pathetic showing against Sheffield United last time out.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Tough choice this weekend, Rotherham are very strong at home. Saying that, I think the players will show a reaction after our worst performance of the season last weekend. Like to see something like:

----------------------------Jaakkola-----------------------
--------Gunter--------Moore/O'Shea/Mcshane------Blackett
Yiadom-------------------------------------------------------------------------Richards
--------Rinomhota------------Bacuna------------------Kelly
------------------------Meite-------------------Baldock

Mannone
Mcintyre
Meyler
McCleary
Barrow
Loader
McNulty

If Moore, O'Shea and Mcshane still not fit, bring in Mcintyre and then Osho on the bench, quite frankly sick of Ilori now, two abysmal performances in a row does not warrant a start. Sims should be sent back to Southampton, utterly useless

Obviously it'll be nothing like this, it'll be the usual garbage and we'll still concede two goals but surely something else is now worth a try

Better to have a bench of 7 of these 8.

It has a certain feel to it, mmmmmmm

Far from optimistic about this one after last weeks mess

Be delighted with a draw

I salute anyone who goes up to support. And utterly admire both their dedication and ability to sustain some
optimism.

Hard place to visit - they are unbeaten in 8 at home, where their 10 games has accounted for 17 of their 21 points so far. Last 3 home games include a 2-1 win over Swansea, and 2-2- draws with Sheffield Utd and QPR.

Only 4 of their 14 home goals have come from open play, with 6 from (true) set pieces and a further 4 from penalties.

At home, they have completed the fewest short passes per game (205) of any team in the league, and the 4th highest long passes (81). It will likely be a busy one for the CBs, possibly better suited to O'Shea - who has won 73% of his aerial duels this season - than Blackett who has won only 37%...

This will not be a pretty game, although don't rule out goals - when playing away we concede more shots per game than any other team, and despite being down the bottom with us, Rotherham are 8th best for shots per game when at home.

They are good at set pieces... uh ohh... We could be doomed... Every time Sheff Utd took a corner I feared the worst.

After all that has happened Marshall has had a week to work with them and hopefully create some togetherness in this squad that being away could be a good thing.. This game could suit O'Shea.. is he fit? First goal is key for me, if he has got them together then can see us digging out a shock 2-1 win... If they score early then it could get nasty...

sounds like both Bod and Meite are 'possibles' for this game. Need one at least to be on the bench at a minimum imo

Great to see Bodvarsson back, I wasn't sure when we signed him but he's been a real success for us and was my POTS last year even with limited game time, I think he could forge a real strong partnership with Meite/Baldock/McNulty

No doubt our biggest game of the season

Have to hope in someway that Rotherham underestimate us a little compared to previous opponents and we may be able to nick a result

Jaakola
Yiadom
Illori
Blackett
Gunter
Bacuna
Rino
Mccleary
Barrow
Mcnulty
Bod

Think McNulty could benefit from a big man next to him, Loader hasn't quite cut the mustard yet hopefully Bod is fit enough to start this one

Sounded like he's been training all week, would hope he could do 60ish minutes if not then perhaps Meite (if fit)

prob be safest to have both Bod and Meite on the bench rather than start

Baldock and McNulty looked ok earlier in the season as a pair - not ideal, but prob worth a go. Would go

Anssi
Yiadom Ilori Blackett Gunter
McCleary Rino Bacuna Barrow
McNulty Baldock

Bod
Meite
Keeper
Kelly
Swift

More likely 60 minutes with Meite then 30 with Bod - or perhaps SM will opt to start both.

Hearing that Marshall is going to bring more academy players into the squad and indeed the XI.

Ilori has this week’s mystery injury.

McIntyre makes debut alongside Blackett

This is going to be a very long afternoon
