Stadium Matchday Upgrade

by Armadillo Roadkill » 28 May 2025 12:22

One of the main things I have been calling for, and the club are about to deliver...

Reading Football Club are delighted to confirm a formal consultation has begun with stadium infrastructure specialists, Landways.

The process will see the London based organisation use digital technology infrastructure to bring to life the club’s vision of delivering a best-in-class facility to Reading.

The provisions will enable the club to offer an optimum fan engagement experience for stadium visitors with the intention of making the Select Car Leasing Stadium one of the most technically advanced facilities in the country.

The appointment will cast particular focus on improving stadium-wide network connectivity, the public address and music entertainment system, and enhanced security, with other elements set to be derived from an extensive review of the stadium’s digital infrastructure.

Speaking of the consultation, Club Chairman Rob Couhig commented, ‘The experience of our supporters at the stadium on both matchdays and non-matchdays is one of my highest priorities, and I am delighted to bring Landways on board to help shape how we can make our home the best it possibly can be.

Having worked with Landways in the past, I have seen first hand the expertise and insight they can bring to the table, and I am excited to see what we can do together.’

Chris Smedley, Chief Executive, Landways “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work again with Rob and his team on this new chapter at Reading FC. Delivering high-performance infrastructure and great technology systems is only part of the story — it’s about building trusted, long-term partnerships that create memorable experiences and long-term value. With Rob’s clear vision for the club, this is set to be an exciting journey."

The work will commence with immediate effect, with the club providing an update once the consultation process has completed.

There’s a lot of PR speak there !
They are going to make the PA audible seems to be the gist of it….

PA system is fine isn’t it? I've never had a problem understanding it, and I wouldn’t say I have great hearing.

The bloke using it on the other hand could use some work.

Think we do a fairly good job with the big screen too.

But if this can deliver some material improvement for minimal cost, then that's great.

The stadium could do with a big clean, a power wash and upgrade a few bits, such as the track round the stadium pitch. That's going to have a big visual impact on the matchday experience for me.

Substitutes being announced are inaudible.

If you visit a stadium with a really good PA, the effect of music before the kick off can be really exciting. At the SCL it's currently like someone holding up an AM radio into a 2G mobile phone.

Watch or rewind highlights on the official stream delivered directly to your phone while you watch the match on it, saving you the tedious hassle of having to watch the match yourself.

Let our interactive AI agent tell you what you thought of the match, saving you the tedious hassle of having to form any opinions of your own.

Order cold, soggy and over-priced food delivered direct to your seat by minimum-wage lackies who take ten minutes to find your seat.

See constantly updated match stats on your own screen and use them to confound anyone over the age of 15, who knows that the only stats that matters if goals for and against.

Register your vote on player of the last 2 minutes and whether the referee's a pcunt or a cockwomble during the match.

Share your mindless thoughts on video and see them shown on the big screen before and after the game, and at half-time. V2 will allow them to be shared during injury breaks and substitutions.

And many other premium services made available by the extra infrastructure and bandwidth as we rename the place from the "SCL Stadium" to the "SCL Interactive Sports Entertainment Experience".

I think you'll find they are implementing the actions I suggested in the end of season survey....

I foresee some 'Americanisms' arriving when it comes to the stadium and matchday experience. Don't worry, they are far from all being awful and some may actually be liked!

Admittedly I wasn't thinking about subs, but then I usually can tell who is coming on for us by sight and couldn’t give a monkey's about the oppo subs. I don’t remember a problem the last few times I went, but I doubt it would stand out in the memory. I reckon any PA system will struggle with in game crowd noise.

Does it mean we could get a WiFi connection that actually works?

5G would be an investment decision by the network providers, not the club. And frankly, the cost benefit case would never pay off to install infrastructure to cope with 10,000 simultaneous network connections 30 times per year for a few hours.

Wi-fi upgrades can, of course, be made by the club - it's just a case of enough routers and a big enough bandwidth of fibre optic into the ISP's network. But agin, whether it is cost effective to provide enough bandwidth to meet peak demand is doubtful.

Don't just hope,

prepare a business case...

No more than 10 slides...

include financials (projected costs and income generated)...

and email it to JJ & cc RC...

If it's convincing, I'm sure they will consider it...
