Dirk Gently But it's a simple equation that most people seem to be missing : More parking = More congestion.

Junction 11, the A33 and especially the roundabout and the stadium entry/exit roads are already at capacity, so trying to squeeze even more cars down them will only make things worse.

The only asnwer is more public transport, intelligently used and properly priced.

But everyone seems to expect to be able to drive to park close by the stadium, to be able to drive away down empty roads as soon as the match is over, and to moan and whine if they can't. It ain't gonna happen by just adding more parking!

Lets not forget though that the club have also laid on more bus services from further afield...

There's also the completion of Green Park train station at the end of 2008 not to mention the completion around the same time of the Jct11 improvements which will double capacity when it is opened not to mention will have dedicated bus, cycle & pedestrian links across the M4 with a new park & ride scheme in 3-mile-X

All this will greatly reduce the traffic congestion when complete but for now we have 18months to 2 years until we get there....

RoyalBlue Even those who live near Reading probably have to resort to cars when the so called public transport doesn't run on occasions such as Bank Holidays (I haven't noticed a magnificent network of safe cycle paths in and around Reading!).

The Madstad does have very good cyclepath access - it's on the main NCN link for starters.

RoyalBlue There's an awful lot of supporters who don't live in Reading and quite a few, my family and I included, who 30+ miles away. So called public transport is not an option.

Public transport (i.e. Park and Ride) for the last few miles is very much an option, and would improve things for everyone.

This new car park is a welcome addition to the options - but it will merely add to the crush of vehicles trying to get on to the A33 Relief road via the already busy access points. What is still needed is car parking that is away from the stadium (and hence those 2 roundabouts), and/or an egress from Green Park onto the Burghfield road, and/or a P&R that is south of the M4 to keep traffic away from the a33 north of the M4.

That's not something RFC can really help you with, is it?

The NCN goes to the station - or are you demanding a public transport system that collects you from your front room and delivers you to your seat at the Madstad?

The trouble is that most people own cars and will not get out of them, we have all paid for the car and the cost of using it afterwards is minimal, 4 in a car from 15 miles away is cheaper than any puplic transport can ever be, wacking up the price of parking just pisses people off and they look for alternative cheaper parking, £10 is the price for much parking around the Madstad now, folk complained, but they still use it.

And how far do you travel and by what means? As it happens, don't park anywhere near the Mad Stad ourselves and aren't afraid of walking.

Park and ride is yet another expense on top of what is already a very expensive day out for exiles like ourselves.

What's more, how far off capacity is the current scheme?

When I'm coming from Winchester, my train ticket is £7.85, add the bus on top of that and you're looking at roughly £11.

If I could drive it then it could work out a lot cheaper.

I travel from N swindon - always use the P&R at Foster Wheeler. It is busy but could cope with more. Hope that helps.

Secured my parking ticket this morning.

Car sharing is, as they say, the way forward.

Never ceases to amaze how many cars turn up at the Mad with only one or two occupants.

I'm absolutely gutted.

Been using Symantec for free for the last season.

The only drawback was the grassy slope up to the main car park. A nightmare in the dark and after heavy rain.

Worth it though.
