Stadium branding

by Mr Irascible » 02 Apr 2008 17:47

having seen how Man Utd have used the outside of their stadium to impose pictures of players and events on the outside walls and glass areas what does the board think about some similar works at the Mad Stad, either as part of the new developments or in the interim. I fully appreciate our history is not as great as United but Reading players in action through the years (current and past) could break up the outside of what is a fairly soulless metal claadded building and help in reinforcing the football club identity. (Or do we have to bow to the rugger buggers too?)

We have to bow to the rugger buggers - all attempts to put up murals or anything else that's football related (even at no cost) have been declined so that they don't offend the "tenants."

Personally, I really like the friezes which hang down from the roof of the Walkers Stadium - but we'd never get them for the reasons stated.

It's never going to happen, even if most people would like to see it. Reading don't have the fan power that someone like United have to actually go to the club and make enough impact for them to listen.
Would be great to see the people behind the scenes make an effort though, I just doubt they care enough about the clubs past to do anything like that.

Billy Whitehurst alledgedly banging one of the other players wives was quite a moment in Readings History - why not put up a statue of that!

Agree with Dirk and the Walkers Stadium comment.

A few of those picture type things maybe with Robin Friday on one, Michael Gilkes etc. Reading legends from our proud past and even our present.

As for offending our tenants, well that's bang out of oder when you the landlord can not do as you wish or your supporters wish because of the 'tenants'!

Do you have recent evidence of this?

How was this problem overcome when they put the club badge on the floor of the tunnel or the pictures of the players down the walls of the tunnel 2 summers ago?

Why not have a projector imbedded in the ground and shown famous Reading players on the stadium wall.It would look fantastic at night!

We can get round the problem by holding half time seances and attempt contact with these players instead.

There is plenty of RFC related stuff inside the stadium. The pictures of formaer players int he concourses, for example. I see no reason why the principal should be any different outside the ground.

Look closely and you'll see that all of those pictures are doube-sided and can be turned over for rugby.

Then how about an elaborate device that at thoe touch of a button turned a load of images outside the stadium around, including the blueness outside that could change to green, and the massive Reading badges? ;)

Seriously, do Irish get offended at the existing colour scheme and the outer badges?

As the stadium is owned by the holding company rather than Reading Football Club Ltd it could be argued that RFC are also tenants!

A couple of weeks back I went to Madrid to watch Real play at the Bernabau, an amazing stadium.

They seem truely proud of their past (which is no surprise I guess!) but have pictures of their legends on banners around the stadium, inside the stadium etc...

Okay our legends may not be on the same scale as Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham, McManaman ( ), but they are our legends and should be honoured as such.
