Umbrellas

by North Somerset Royal » 04 Aug 2008 14:04

Does anyone know what the clubs policy is on allowing umbrellas into the ground? I have always assumed that as the stewards view even plastic bottle tops as potential weapons they would be unlikely to admit something potentially more lethal. However having got drenched in a downpour on Saturday I noticed some people did have them.

As been said before, you can never read anything into pre-season friendlies...

I asked JM on Saturday and he said he was quite happy to have as many as possible and had provided an unlimited budget for them. However Coppell says that whilst he appreciates that there is a need for more cover in certain positions there is no point in getting any new brollies in before the window closes as we could land up with too many. Also he is mindful that it was a brolly got Steve McLaren the sack as England manager. Seems I will have to test the water.

I hear John Madejski likes to sit with fans.

I believe Riseley had his brolly taken away and not given back until the end of the game last season or possibly season before. HTH.

The danger is the plastic bottle top holder might screw the top onto a bottle and therefore create a bottle with a lid on which is a danger as in a stampede people will fall over on it.

I presume fans also have to deskin their bannana's before entering the Mad Stad due to the risk of bannana skin related injuries.

Although knowing Riseley it was probably filled with torn up newspaper, after he got warned for throwing it at a game once.

No. He hasn't thrown paper for about 6 years. I think it was a long pointy one, as opposed to a telescopic one, so they nabbed it off him as he tried to walk in with it.

Thank you RL. Actually the club now tell me that in future a brolly will not be needed after roll out of the Quickpay scheme. I understand that they plan to increase the size of the plastic cards so that they can be held over ones head in the event of rain.

I'm glad you told me that because I got into the Villa game with an enormous pointy umbrella and was planning on taking it again if I needed to. They still nicked my bottle tops off me though.

Ive taken a small one in several times and my mate has brought in a huge golf one. Never any problems

I mean what could they tell you to do with it? Its a bit different to something disposable like a bottle

Hmmm, now I have a dilemma. Do I try to get in with a big umbrella on a rainy day or not?

Where are the rules for what you can take in and what you can't?

Must be on the OS somewhere
Theres a link to a word doc here: http://www.readingfc.premiumtv.co.uk/pa ... 63,00.html
Havent got word installed tho so cant check

I honestly think you'll be fine Sarah...not as if you dont have a legitimate use for it on a rainy day and I see so many people with them, it'd be a nightmare for them to confiscate them off everyone

7 The following articles must not be brought within the Ground - knives, fireworks, smoke canisters, air-horns, flares, bottles, weapons, dangerous or hazardous items, laser devices, bottles, glass vessels, cans, poles and any article that might be used as a weapon and/or compromise public safety. Any person in possession of such items will be refused entry to the Ground...

15.2 Being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury, when entering the Ground or in a public area of the Ground from which the event can be directly viewed.

No mention of umbrellas, but bottle tops aren't mentioned either, yet bottles gets three mentions and they still let me in with a bottle of Highland Spring (minus its top, of course).

"any article that might be used as a weapon and/or compromise public safety" must cover all sorts of items then.

Before reaching the turnstile remove the cap and put it in your pocket. Replace once inside the ground.

You must have a small head if you were going to use a bottle top to protect you from the rain!

Isn't the question more about how suitable an umbrella is in a crowded football stadium?

Just get wet, ala Reading 4-3 Oxford.

I did get a fine golfing brolly taken of me by the Mad stad's finest a few seasons ago. They left it against the fence near where the STAR office used to be. When I stated that I would simply retrieve it a half-time and take it back into the ground the genius in orange was stumped as to his next course of action. Since that day I have been as dry as Spacey's bedsheets.
