Howard Kendall

by Ian Herring » 17 Oct 2015 21:36

Very sorry to see this gentleman come to the end of his days.

Prior to my Reading days I saw Howard play out his latter days at St. Andrews in the colours of Birmingham City and I have to say he continued his graceful and skilful ways post-Goodison and his eventful times at Everton.

May you rest in peace Howard, wherever it is we journey to after our fagged out days on this rather rancid planet.

Best wishes and some true human love to you my friend.

Cheers.

Arrest.

Apart from the obvious delight I took in Oxford being denied European football I think his team would have won the European Cup had it not been for the banning of English teams at that time.

RIP in peace.

The Guardian obituary contains this wonderful section:

“On another occasion, after a run of poor results, Howard decided the squad should meet for a bonding session in Chinatown on the next Tuesday. It went so well that some of the players were there until it was almost dinner time. The team won the next match and the next and the next and everyone agreed that the Tuesday gatherings had been crucial and the same wild lunches should happen every week. Then they lost and Howard gathered the players together and said: ‘Right, lads, this Tuesday routine is clearly not working any more. How do you feel about Wednesdays?’”
