...woefully late with the preview this w/e - apols for that  - probably cos I went out last night to the Cup Tie at Ascot.

'Yellamen' edged past Div One Milton Utd : Dennison pulled off a number of good stops to keep the lead especially late on.
Diddy are the visitors in the next round on Sat 20th. No Racing or other reasons to shift the tie that w/e unless the clubs choose too.
Last nights game was brought forward for 'Brenda's' extravaganza this PM - including a couple of dashes up the mile-course - one at around 16:00 too.

In the other 'local' tie shifted to Friday night for groundshare purposes, Thame overcame Abbey Rgrs 3-0

Bedfont 3-2 Windsor

Windsor 2-0 up soon after HT with the management shouting, "now manage the game!" which they proved singularly incapable of doing.

Same old same old. We STILL cannot cope with a big hoof upfield. (During a 1st half break in play huddle the Bedfont captain shouted at his players "we've seen the one time we went long we caused them problems so why are we trying to play football - were not fcuking good enough to do that - put it long!" He wasn't wrong!)

I have seen all 8 of the PSFs and we always looked best with proper width. Our 2 best wide players, both 18, were not even on the bench of 7 subs.

They may have been unfit. The management may have felt that starting with 3 teenagers and another couple on the bench may have been enough but proper wingers create problems for defenders.

Our player coach Ashley Smith who played for Chesham Utd in their defeat of Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup last season wasn't on the bench either. Again, I know not why. May have been a very good reason but with him on the pitch we would not have lost.

Our 2 ball playing midfielders, Sheehan and Wretham who can make things happen with a junky run and pin point pass were both on the bench. Without them we hardly made a pass, and never looked comfortable on the ball in midfield.

Our 17yo keeper (who has stepped up after the departure of the previously mentioned Carl Dennison) flapped at a couple of crosses but made some good saves and launched some forward momentum with decent distribution.

However their keeper made 2 mistakes to gift us 2 headed goals but otherwise didn't make a single proper save.

In short - we got exactly what we deserved.

...took in a new ground this PM (Sunday) - since I'm off tomorrow (Monday) I offered my mate free choice of venue. We'd done all of the other grounds hosting FA Cup Ties within range today so headed for the 14:00 KO @ Halstead v Newmarket.
I've no idea why but he always tries to go for games in Essex given the chance - I usually try to exclude them from the lists I show him! 8) I kept my word today.
M4/M25 up round to M1 was iffy but I made up plenty of time beyond S.Mimms and then the M11 - arrived 20 mins before KO. Got a free car park space almost next to the ground. Programmes still available; had a swift half pre-match in a functional enough bar - Pie 'n Chips £2 - settled down in stand for KO - surveyed local populace - highlights and Tats everywhere - together with some very unusual hairstyles - and that included the kids.
Everything was fine until 32' in, when visiting forward bustled clear of defence and charged into the box. Huge bundle ensued with him, the keeper and a covering FB ended up entangled in a heap - with something probably broken low on the forwards' limb. Game halted, poor lad couldn't be moved - game eventually abandoned at 15:45. Got slightly concerned when they put a makeshift screen round him - bearing in mind where he was from - expected the Vet to turn up at any moment!! According to Newmarkets' twitter account the Ambulance finally arrived around 17:45 - THREE Hours after they were called !!!

I watched Wealdstone 2 St Albans City 2 in the National League South last night.

What a match and what an atmosphere. Just like the old southbank but with a lot less numbers. The Stones support make a hell of a racket in the Bulla stand and sing all the old songs we used to enjoy at Elm Park. There was all the old wit and banter and ribbing of the referee and goalkeeper that you don't really get in the plastic bowls of the football league. All the funny characters. The pessimist, the cheat ref shouter, huge amount of wit and ribbing coming from the terraces.

End to end stuff. Wealdstone looked like they were going to concede every time St Albans came forward. But Wealdstone look pretty useful when they attack as well. On loan they have a young Cambridge United starlet on the left wing, Dylan Williams. He was causing problems all evening and a new striker in Elliot Benyon who was making darting runs all night. If only they still had Scott Davies to pick him out with one of his precision passes. Davies has gone to Oxford City and Wealdstone have replaced him with three hard workers who don't quite have the same class.

Wealdstone nearly nicked it right at the end when Danny Green had a clear shot on goal from inside the penalty area. But in true non league style he blazed it over the bar and the Wealdstone faithful had to settle for a point. Last season they had to wait until October before registering their first National League South win. They're worried that it could be another long wait for their first three points this season as well. But I reckon they'll get the points this Saturday at home to Margate. A side they thrashed 4-1 towards the end of last season.

All in all, a great nights entertainment in Ruislip watching proper football. What football always used to be about when we were at the old Elm Park.

..... fuller round-up of midweek scores later in the week but pride of place goes to Hungerford Town. In spite of what wonderful BBC Radio Baaarkshire reported this AM on their sports report at 08:30, they actually won 2-0 v Oxford City NOT 0-0.

Now sit top (momentarily as everyone else plays this evening) of the National South.

Will have to try and get Tim/Adi to check on the 'FoCcer Reports' before they venture into NL.

Tim and Ady spoke about that. They were seeing a 2-0 win on twitter last night but when they came in this morning to put the reports together the official BBC feed said 0-0

Serves them right for not having someone at the game when they are meant to be providing a local radio service.

I attended Kidlington's first ever Southern League home match last night. The first half against Hanwell Town was rattlingly good end-to-end stuff which somehow remained 0-0. Second half was dreadful, Hanwell took the lead and the home side fell apart, 0-3. Over-hearing conversation it is apparent they were missing one or two players to holiday commitments but have also lost players from their Hellenic League winning side to the likes of Didcot Town, Wantage, North Leigh and - randomly - Marlow. 97 souls were in attendance.

I do love non-league reasons for player absentees. 'On holiday' is a new one. Maidenhead were missing a player a few years back due to running out of annual leave.

Why randomly to Marlow?

I think they've lost two players to Marlow over the summer and one of them used to play for them. It does seem that Kiddlington lost a fair few of their better players after the success of last season but I guess that must be pretty common for sides that make that jump up due to the extra travelling.

Being absent due to holiday is the 3rd most regular reason in the lower reaches, after injury and suspension.

Cracking game at the Denplan tonight. Winchester City 4 - 2 Salisbury City, in front of 580 fans (the majority Salisbury) - biggest crowd I have seen there.

Winch kicked off, but barely touched the ball again before Salisbury scored, and I thought we were in for a stuffing, but we pulled one back and dominated for the rest of the half, scoring two more.
3-1 at half time.
Steve Claridge obviously gave Salisbury a kick up the arse at half time, because they started the second half at one hell of a pace, pulling one back very early. After that it was end to end stuff, with Salisbury looking more likely to score. Their players suddenly became absolute sportsmen, helpfully retrieving the ball for every Winchester throw in and goal kick, while their fans whined about time wasting if a Winch player had the temerity to pause for a second before taking a throw.

Then Winch got a fourth and it was all over. Salisbury fans turn out in numbers for their team (fair play) but they are a wingeing bunch, who seem to think they are entitled to win everything. Their rush to the exit when we went 4-2 up was a joy to behold.

Salisbury ought to be one of the better teams in this league (along with Hereford) so based on tonight's performance, it could be another good season for Winchester City. 8)

Dismal start but with 6 first teamers missing unsurprising, good 2-2 draw on Tuesday having been 2 down at Half time at Evesham. Diddy having to sign a few players a bit last minute to cope with these injuries but still expect a half decent season, got a reasonable team down there now when they are all fit.

2 in 2 for Phil Whitehead's son Ben who scored a load of goals for Wantage (who are certs for last place) and just signed Declan Benjamin who was at Oxford City last season in Conf south so hopefully might get our first win on Saturday.

What a difference 3 days makes. Winch were rubbish today. 2-0 defeat at home to Mangotsfield in front of 120 fans.

Highlight of the game was a clearance going through the window of the burger hut.

Oh, and I won £40 on the 50/50, so 8)

Windsor 2-1 Epsom & Ewell (Att 202)

Hard earned victory against one of the better teams in the league who won their 1st game 9-2 having been 2-0 down at HT.

The revolving door continues to rotate with 3 new faces coming in and a very different looking team to the one that lost a 2-0 lead last week.

Far stronger at the back with ex Reading Town central defender Kamal Llewellyn Reid making a decent debut.

Newcomer and sub Keanu Williams notched a late winner. (A bit of research suggests he was on Watford's books as a 12 year old.) He is a now a product of the Cox Green Academy connection which had 3 players on the pitch at the end and looks like it is going to be a very productive alliance for Windsor.

In all honesty, tense and enjoyable though it was, it wasn't a game with much slick pass and move on display, but was certainly a great game for Windsor to win against tough opponents who were on a bit of a roll.

E&E took the lead midway through the 1st half when a back pass was badly under hit and left Sobte in no man's land - pretty simple for the striker to round him and roll into an empty net. Windsor hit back soon after with a splendid solo goal from Kieran Knight - spun his marker adeptly to create space, took a couple of strides forward and slammed it right in the bottom corner. A super finish and although I've seen mention of him in a former club's match reports as "veteran" he certainly knows where the goal is!

The blend of youth and experience looked promising and resilient today and I detected a mood of optimism amongst fans that hasn't been felt for a while.

Let's see what Tuesday and Guildford brings!

Chesham United 3-0 Dorchester Town
Hayes & Yeading United 0-1 Leamington - not the start HandY wanted at their shiny 'new 'SkyeX' stadium - roughly sited on or close to the old Yeading FC ground back in Hayes. Minor hint: they haven't sorted out their licence yet so no Alcohol available until they do, for those that fret over these things  . Website expects it'll be sorted by BH Monday fixture v Dunstable Town. Next game away at the Camrose - now known as the 'Arc Cancer Charity Stadium', this Tuesday evening.

Kings Langley 2-3 Slough Town 'Rebels' recover from 2-0 down early 1st half with goals from Dunn & Dobson before H/T and Mooney secured the three points on 83'. They host Stratford at Beaconsfield SYCOB on Tue. Then St Ives at the same venue NEXT Saturday 20th, following which, if all is on schedule and the safety boxes have been ticked, they'll have their first home match back in Slough at Arbour Park vs HandY, on B/H Mon, after 14 yrs exile.

Stratford Town 1-1 Basingstoke Town

CCLP
Abbey Rangers 2-4 Guildford City - promoted side getting a roughing up here - City's consistency let them down last season, though they improved markedly following a large influx of new blood - could be contenders this time around, though their ground isn't ideal for spectating and the pitch was exceedingly ropey following some drastic drainage work mid-season 15-16. Good contest in prospect this midweek as they come to Stag Meadow - is high on my list of probables. 8) .

Badshot Lea 1-1 Raynes Park Vale
Bedfont & Feltham 0-3 Westfield - 'other' new boys facing a harsh lesson so far too -a doz. conceded in their first two games. Host fellow 'debs' Abbey Rangers on Tuesday.
Colliers Wood United 1-3 Hanworth Villa
Farnham Town 2-3 Bedfont Sports
Hartley Wintney 3-1 CB Hounslow United
Horley Town 3-1 AFC Hayes
Knaphill 3-2 Camberley Town - I'd expect 'Knappers' could challenge this time around too and this is an impressive result against the divisions 'big boys' - started a great run to 5th spot at the end of the season but were well in arrears of the three run-away leaders.

Sutton Common Rovers 0-2 Chertsey Town

HELLP
Binfield 4-1 Lydney Town
Brackley Town Saints 0-5 Longlevens AFC
Brimscombe & Thrupp 4-0 Flackwell Heath - minor shock here - particularly the margin of defeat
Burnham 0-2 Tuffley Rovers - 'Blues' woes ongoing - didn't help they ended the game with 8 men  - Chat room suggests their disciplinary prospects will not be improved by picking up a few ex-RTFC players. Burnham have an even tougher game at the 'Moles' tomorrow evening - might need a calculator for that one :? - Tuffley who struggled last term and were reprieved from relegation (two One West clubs turned down the chance of promotion; Sarries and Hooky) , have started well this time around with 2 from 2.

Carterton 0-3 Ascot United
Henley Town 1-3 Royal Wootton Bassett - both promoted sides finding it very hard at this level - Red Kites also finished short handed as they collected three Red Cards.
Oxford City Nomads 1-4 Bracknell Town
Thame United 4-2 Highworth Town - United go top with this impressive showing against one of the fancied outfits.

AFC Stoneham 6-2 Andover New Street - ANS's bright pre-season not continuing into the regular season just yet, though they did win their first game last week.
Alton 1-1 Weymouth Res
Hamble Club 4-3 Fleet Spurs - new club to this league doing well so far - ground not fully upgraded yet so hold off if you are thinking of popping down - clubhouse should be completed before Xmas - facilities all a bit al fresco and the lights not wired up yet - will need them early September - other new guys (Baffins MR) also on 100% following a win at Christchurch on Friday evening.

Tadley Calleva 2-1 Hythe & Dibden

..picked up mate c 12:30 only to find eldest (or quite haphazardly, the missus) had tinkered with SatNav and reset 'home' as Brum :| took a while to restore the RG1 code and get it to start properly, which meant we were against the clock for a 15:00 start. To begin with A33/M3/A303 route was clear enough to get some time back. Our attempted destination was a 'new tick' at Sherborne v Longwell Green in the Western Premier. Since it is vaguely in the middle of nowhere just inside Daarset on the Zummerset border, I was happier not map-reading. As I've no doubt said before my mate doesn't 'do' maps; on a previous foggy trip to Peterboro for a Cup Tie, I noticed he had the map open on the page for Dundee and yet STILL managed to direct me onto a road with a Courage Pub on it  !
Sadly the A303 reverted to default 'f£ck up-everyone's-holiday' mode and ground to halt nr Amesbury. As time was fast evaporating, I resorted to using the map and headed south on the A345 to the A30 via Salisbury & on through Shaftesbury. Hadn't realised the 'A' in A30 means 'Awkwardly narrow and windy' - several slow drivers, Hay Trucks and Tractors later, we eventually arrived near the ground at about 15:10, only for the SatNav to come up with a final twist and direct us up and away, around a hill behind the ground from where there was no access.
Better signeage at the entrance to the long multi-sports driveway, might have improved things but at least we got most of a game unlike last Sunday.
Now have two clubs left to complete this division - but these are really not feasible for a normal Saturday, being Bridport or Buckland down the other side of Newton Abbot. Might need to revisit those family holiday plans for next year..... 8)
