I think thats a bit harsh tbh. For 2-3 years he was up there with the best midfielders in Europe, in 98/99 in particular

in 99 he was runner up in the FIFA world player of the year, runner up in the Ballon d'Or and won the UEFA club footballer of the year award

Don't think its harsh. Other than LA Galaxy I don't think Beckham was ever the best player at the clubs he played for.

Yes, I was talking about this the other day to a very non-football person and, presumably in view of the fantastic publicity sought and achieved by both Mr & Mrs Beckham, she thought that he had to be on a par with Pele, Maradona and that Cliff Richard lookalike (not Messi) as a footballer.

I said that if she had followed football rather than the fashion pages she might have a very different view.

If he'd stayed fit and healthy he'd be right up there. But his was a career that sadly didn't hit the heights it should have. Very rarely I'd say this but there's a player that really should have gone to Man United. I think Fergie might have been able to keep him on a shorter leash than he got at Spurs and the bright lights of London.
