Eintracht's abysmal CL campaign reaches its inevitable conclusion as they squander a 2-1 lead to goals after 80 and 94 mins to lose in Baku.

They join Kairat, Slavia Prague and Villareal in being out before the final round of group fixtures.

Pepe the Horseman Even as Bodo Glimt's biggest fan I didn’t see this coming.

Since you mentioned them, maybe last season but definitely this ,I have followed their progress with interest.
They really are a good side aren't they and , despite their successes , continue to be over-rated.

Elsewhere good to see Liverpool back to form-what a touch from Sbozo in the move for the classic Liverpool 3rd goal.
They really are still a decent side but continue to have real problems against teams that just want to defend and Slot, by his own admission, can't yet find the answer.

Mind you, Arteta and Pep had a similar unresolved problem last weekend.

Yeh, I watched them a lot last season in the Europa League, and backed them to win it at 50/1. They lost in the semis against Spurs :( Surprised their team and manager haven't all been poached yet. Feel like Berg would do a good job for a Brentford.

listened to a thing the other day where they asked the same question of the B/G manager and the pundit said he is really well paid (miles above any other manager across the Scandinavian leagues), has loads of control over how the club is run, is massively appreciated there, and just really enjoys living in his own country and managing the best team. Has apparently been approached a number of times in the last few years by big clubs and says no each time. Celtic & Ajax both tried to get him recently and he wasn't interested.

Winston Biscuit Benfica!!!! Unbelievable!!

Absolute scenes. Made even better by the fact their keeper was time wasting a couple of mins earlier before they realized they needed another goal.

It really pains me to see RM have to go through the play offs

Don’t suppose for a moment they could be drawn against Atletico, PSG or Inter or even Newcastle as UEFA are bound to seed things to accordingly favour bigger clubs as much as possible

Real, Inter and PSG (and Juventus) in the play-offs. Half of the top 8 is going to get absolutely shafted again.

Football is theatre, isn't it. Trubin wasting time, Benfica suddenly realise they need a goal, Mourinho, so long without one of those 'Mourinho moments' frantically waves his keeper up for the free-kick. Then football happens. Incredible.

Worth noting that Spurs qualified directly to the last 16 - they did this with 4 of their wins coming against sides who failed to make the next round - FCK (31st), Eintracht (33), Slavia Prague (34), Villarreal (35) - the other Dortmund (17) and 2 draws against Monaco (21) and Bodo/Glimt (23). Their one loss was to PSG (11).

Just in comparison as I know their games best - Eintracht finished 33rd having played the sides who finished 3rd (L), 4th (L), 5th (L), 14th (L), 15th (L), 20th (w), 22nd, 30th (d)

So one could say Spurs got a very favourable draw in terms of how their opponents performed.

So could Real draw Benfica or is that barred as they just played in the league stage?

And can teams from the same country be drawn together at this stage?

IIUIC positions in the final league table are already kind of matched up against 1 of 2 opposition teams. and you work it down from the top

so Real Madrid & Inter, who are 9th & 10th, will play Benfica or Bodo/Glimt who are 23rd & 24th. PSG & Newcastle, who are 11th & 12th, will play Monaco & Qarabag, who are 21st & 22nd etc

the draw just sorts out which of the 2 options everyone gets

and yes teams from the same country can face each other and teams who already played each other can face each other

Potential R16 opponents for England's five top-8 teams...

Arsenal - Atalanta, Leverkusen, Dortmund, Olympiakos
Liverpool - Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge, Galatasaray
Spurs - Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge, Galatasaray
Chelsea - PSG, Newcastle, Monaco, Qarabag
City - Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Bodo Glimt, Benfica

Newcastle will play either Monaco or Qarabag in R32.
Arsenal and Liverpool avoid Madrid and Inter until at least the semi finals, but might face PSG in the QFs.

Absolutely detest the governing bodies’ obsession with having to seed everything, why can’t we have some proper “do or die” excitement in the early stages of these competitions and therefore an “also ran” getting a bit of luck in a cup run?

With that^ being said, we had City v Real in R32 last year, Liverpool v PSG in R16, and Real played Atletico. This year, City v Real or Inter likely in R16, possibly Barcelona v PSG too.
