Re: Record Watch 13/14

... on another of my NL anorak-related ramblings, I've just spotted this from the WEARSIDE League - STEP07 of the Pyramid - same level as the Reading Senior League:

1 Stockton Town 12 12 0 0 37 +30 36
2 Ryhope Colliery Welfare 11 10 1 0 49 4 +45 31
3 Cleator Moor Celtic 11 9 0 2 32 11 +21 27

1st visit 3rd this coming Wednesday evening - note most clubs at this level 'oop there' have floodlights and play in semi-decent grounds - puts a lot if not ALL of our STEP07 leagues to shame.

... but apart from the very tenuously OP-related point re records: what really made me

[OFF AT A WEIRD TANGENT ALERT]

..was the side in 3rd place above, are from nr Whitehaven over in Cumbria :? - and need to travel a mere 100 miles to get to their nearest rivals in this 20 team league ... AND they regularly play midweek - though I'd presume the League's Fixture Compiler must do some serious re-jigging to ensure fair play with the distances involved - also must entail setting off by 16:00 for 19:30 KO!!

.. looking about seems to be some kind of warped/isolated cultural link going on here - Whitehaven Amateurs and Windscale also have played 'out of area' in the Wearside League in spite of being over on the North WEST Coast?

The highest placed 100% club in the Pyramid - for those of you like me, sad enough to be interested - is Daventry Town from Sluff's league = The Calor Gas Southern League Division One Central - they currently have 7 wins from 7.

No Fixed Abode
Franchise FC Phew !!

Credit to Orient for pushing up to 8 - that's nomean achievement.

Just goes to show how incredible 13 really is. 8)

Whilst it's good. It's still not a major trophy.

Just like Torres, another open goal mised - or are you just scratching the surface ?

"It's good, but it's not quite Carling Cup" would have been so much better

Fox Talbot Trophies schmophies - there's a half a dozen of them a year.

In 125 years of league football there's only 5 (I think) clubs who have ever won 14 on the spin and only one who has ever won 13 on the spin from the start of the season.

If only we'd have a trophy to show for it.

Re-living the 13 ina row season in this article has just given me a lovely warm glow inside.

As the run progressed I cut out all the EP and national clippings I could find and stuck them on my bedroom wall.

It's also the reason why I still hate pCunting WoLOLves.

Reference the 13 in a row record, I think Fulham are the only team to have seriously challenged in when they got to 10 about 10 years ago which, when you put it into perspective, still makes it the 3rd best perfect start in league history after us and Spurs in 61.

Have to admit im slightly concerened about Wolves, think they will at least threaten the 106 this season. They have a squad clearly too good for L1 and prooving it so far.

Having just played around with some numbers, I am going to predict that either Orient or Wolves will take our record this season

Not related but it's not worth a new thread - League Two seems literally anyone's this season. I remember SDR claiming that 6 or 7 defeats was the end of the road for promotion. Fleetwood Town are top with 5 defeats already.

8 points separates Fleetwood from Pompey in 16th.

On the record - Wolves do look very strong.

But they still need 72 points from 34 games. It's a big ask. If they lose, say, 5 games, they'll need to win at least 21 of the remaining 29 to beat it.

Chesterfield haven't won for about 20 games, and they're still third.

Rangers might beat it in a 36-game season. Just. Scottish League One might be the place to look for 'earliest league title won', they are 11 points clear with a game in hand already.

Shouldn't really count though should it, it's like forcing ManU to play in the Conference.

On the assumption no team in the PL or L2 will get close to 106, here are the likely threats which we can all hopefully tick off before May:

Team (Max Pts)

Burnley (129)
Leicester (128)
QPR (127)

Leyton Orient (131)
Wolves (129)
Peterborough (125)

If we're going to be really pedantic about this - Chester got 107 points last season (Pld 42; W35; D5; L3).
