Various sources reporting that Martin Zubimendi will leave Real Sociedad in the summer and join Arsenal, a year after he nearly joined Liverpool. Will be one hell of a midfield at the Emirates alongside Rice and Odegaard. And will cover the, erm, unavailability of Partey.

In terms of that transfer, I don't think the fans would now swap Gravenberch for Zubimendi anyway - but that's a bit of luck and excellent coaching from Slot. More broadly, I think FSG's reputation lands solely with how the contract situations are resolved for the big three. If, and it seems unlikely, all three sign, I think the owners will get a bit of leeway.

It’s not that they’d swap it’s the fact they recognise the club needs cover in that area that will allow Slot to rotate the squad without the loss of excellence. They’ve been looking for cover there for 3 or 4 years and after the utter farcical mess FSG made of Caicedo and then Lavia last year they don’t want to see yet another farcical mess made of yet another one - it’s bad enough with the Trent/Mo/van Dijk contract messes that they’ve created this season without adding yet more avoidable cr@p on top.

Understand the underlying point, but Zubimendi isn't cover for anyone. He's not moving if he isn't starting. In that sense Liverpool don't 'need' him anymore, albeit I think he is even better than Gravenberch.

yeah I do think Gravenberch's performances this season may have meant Liverpool were cooling somewhat on Zubimendi anyway. If you were Zubimendi and wanting a guarantee you were joining as a starting player, Arsenal is where someone is needed right now, Liverpool is not

Really not any different between the two for him is it? Arsenal have Rice and Odegaard and they’re not exactly cr@p so would he be guaranteed a place there any more than at Liverpool where he’d be essentially fighting with Gravenberch and MacAllister.

Also, though he seems to be doing well in the position it’s not really what Gravenberch was bought for so bringing in a “proper” DM (and Slot, I’ve read somewhere, apparently likes his teams to play with two in that sort of role) would give a little more flexibility in overall team options as well as provide the much needed cover in that role that they need.

I may have it wrong, but I had Zubimendi down as strictly a defensive focused midfielder sitting just in front of the back 4, so at Liverpool would be competing with Gravenberch, but at Arsenal would compete with the role Jorginho or Partey are asked to play, with Rice & Odegaard playing in front of that position

As I noted previously, I don't think Partey will be an Arsenal player for much longer, for 'reasons'. Jorginho 33 now and at the tail-end of his usefulness in that engine-room role.
