No Fixed Abode If Fran Kirby is that good - why didn't she start most games?

Ok, I know it's probably bait but I'll comment anyway.

Fran Kirby has shown that she has the ability to be a top, top player and potentially a mainstay in the England team for the next decade.

What the World Cup has shown though is that she lacks the consistency that is gained from playing against top players each week. She can absolutely tear it up week in, week out in WSL2, which goes to prove that she is far too good for that league. She needs to be playing in WSL1 against a higher standard of player week in, week out and hopefully next season she will be doing that with Reading.

So how come she was called 'mini Messi' when Messi has consistency in his game? Perhaps she should be likened to Michael Meaker for now?

I think in that game, she offered something different and was key to England's win, hence the rather overboard and somewhat embarrassing comparison by Sampson in the heat of the moment, specifically about that game. I don't think anyone would seriously consider her the female Messi.

Either that or he compared her to Messi because they're both short arses

Japan were totally there for the taking but too much hoofing and not enough cutting edge did for England... desperately unlucky og she did everything right and has nothing to blame herself for.

I enjoyed watching it much more than the mens last world cup and most of the previous few years before Hodgsons tenure even though the same ability and quality isn't there.

If i lived in reading I'd seriously consider popping along to some women's games.

Such a shame - Bassett had been excellent most of the tournament.

I feel I've seen those sorts of freak happenings in important England games so many times down the years (just when they are starting to look half decent) that it almost seemed inevitable.

Of course they can develop technique, vision and artistry (and will do over time) but they were a credit to the sport / profession and there is much good that the men can learn from them about respect and sportsmanship but sadly a big fat zero the other way round.

Even more sadly, as the profile of the women's game (and its participants) continues to grow, (partly on the back of this WC), as everyone in truth recognises it surely will, in reality we almost certainly will see the general surliness, disrespect and all round lack of sportsmanship that characterises the men's game transfer across to the women's game rather than the other way around.

England absolutely battered Japan in the second half and were really unlucky with 2 or 3 excellent chances that they didn't convert (the free header from a corner going about 6 inches wide probably the best chance of the lot).

Been generally really good to watch though the officiating at times has been on a par with some of the shocking stuff we see at a Men's World Cup.

Typical of the English mentality these days. Even if we do fairly well, we're always plucky losers. As a Nation we need to know how to win and win ugly when needed.

If reports are true, Fran may be moving to Chelsea. Will she start most games for them?

Amazing performance so far by England....probably our best of the tournament! This German team humiliated us in November, so to still be in it at this stage is immense! Also loving the ref, who seems to be happy to let just about anything go! Some really interesting challenges going in!

Fair play to them, caught the end of normal time and thought I'd stay with it for extra time, penalty was cool as you like.

Ref was questionable at best.

That has to be up there with one of the stupidest fouls I've ever seen committed to give away a penalty. Insane defending.

Well done to England, they looked the more likely side from the second half onwards (didn't see the first). I worried they couldn't score to save their lives at one point, but that was a top draw penalty.

Just a shame Kirby didn't get on the pitch.

What a way to finish the tournament. Finish 3rd beating the world number 1 for the first time at the 21st attempt.

Well done England.

Celebrations now entering into a cringe fest period so it's time to turn it off.

Great stuff and an excellent display by Bardsley. (She likes a punch!!)

Bit tense in those last few minutes.

Stef Houghton is the sort of inspirational captain the men's team could benefit from. A real leader.

The BBC's still pushing their equality agenda:

The performance was the second best by an England team following the 1966 win by the men's side and eclipsed the 1990 men's team, who finished fourth in Italy.

There simply isn't enough :| at the comparison. They did good. But they're different sports

Part of me is now fed up of the (predictably) over-the-top, in-your-face, publicity about the women's football.

If they're going to promote it - fine, but it's shoved down your throat constantly. Maybe the marketing and advertising people are the same ones who play Sweet Caroline at the madstad?

I am very proud of these ladies who showed guts and commitment. Forget any comparisons. Let's enjoy the moment and bask in the sense of achievement being felt. :D

If, as is rumoured, she is about to join Chelsea this seems to have spectacularly backfired on our Kes.

Feel embarrassed for you m8, chins up.
