Wasn't that the rule until the more recent changes, although by recent I probably mean about 30 odd years ago. Didn't think keepers were allowed to move at all before that.

Major bugbear of mine in a penalty shootout is keepers always diving early. The ones right in the corners aren't getting saved so why bother going so early. They'll always be someone who hits it straight down the middle, scuffs it a bit or is waiting until the keeper dives so can't get a lot of power on it. Just wait for those.

This is a result of modern football analysis. It is likely a club analyst has given the goalkeeper coach or the keeper directly a list of names on the opposition teams and where they would normally go on penalties. They go early for the reason you pointed out, if you don't go hard and early towards a corner of the goal then you just won't save it.

I agree with your general point though, I think keepers rely far too much on the analysis rather than the feel for the moment. When I am coaching younger goalkeepers I rarely ever practice saving penalties as you simply cannot replicate that same feeling you'll have in proper shootout situation. What I do advise them is to just watch the demenor of the taker (are they nervous etc) and then I get them to just watch the feet and legs, don't look at anything else. You can normally see a few steps away from the ball the shape of the foot which gives away where they are going.

Decent relegation battle in League Two, with three points separating 23rd - 18th.

Think it is about time Oldham do one from the Football League. They just seem completely pointless and have done nothing for many years now.

If you told me they'd been in League Two for 25 years I'd have believed you. But according to Wiki this is only their 4th season in League Two, after spending 21 years in League One

Completely forgot they had Paul Scholes In charge too

Weren't they once good*?

Good to see FGR winning, and Sutton up there. Hope Barrow stay up. Glad Scunthorpe got down. They've been awful for years

Can't believe it has been that long, to be honest. I first remember Oldham as a top flight club - John Sheridan, Mike Milligan, Ian Marshall, Ian Olney, Paul Ritchie.

Remember being gutted for them when they played Manchester United in the 1994 FA Cup semi. Really wanted them to win it and they were close to doing so.

Andy, yes. Back in the days when strikers wore tiny shorts and were double hard bastards.

Can we talk about the absolute amazing job Nigel Clough has done at Mansfield.

They took 7 points from first 9 matches.

He has come in and now they have taken 42 points from a possible 51 - simply outstanding.

Another case of a manager can really make a difference.

Has always bemused me as to why Clough hasn't got bigger management jobs - he's a Burton Albion legend, and did a great job at Sheffield United too.

I would not say no to him at Reading tbh. Think he is very good at getting a lot from very little to work with.

Unless I’m misreading something, wasn’t he appointed last at the beginning of last season?

6th November 2020
P77 / W34 / D20 / L23 / 44.2%win

Their record from 30th October is P21 / W16 / D3 / L2 / 76.19%win which is obviously amazing, but take it before that:

P56 / W18 / D17 / L21 / 32.14%win which is pretty average, bordering poor.

Yep, albeit when Clough was appointed, they had won 5 of their last 34 games. So slow progress, but he certainly turned the ship around.

It seems like they've only ever had JF Hasselbaink or Clough as a manager.
