Mr Angry Those rankings show that England underachieved in Euro 2012; they should have got to the semi-finals.

Germany also under-achieved; they should have got to the final.

My German colleagues were utterly distraught at losing the semi; contrast that with the most of the press and England fans who were generally happy to simply get out of the qualifying group, ecstatic to have won that group and who gave the impression that losing the quarter-final on penalties trying to play like a non-league team against a Premier League team in an FA Cup match was somehow a success......

But we didn't under achieve with the players we had.

FIFA rankings are rubbish to read into because 95% of competitive games (qualifiers) should be little more than a formality. Under Capello, we have largely done well in the matches we should do well in (leave out USA and Algeria). If the likes of Italy qualify for major tournaments with a couple more slip ups and upsets along the way, we'll have a higher ranking. It definitely doesn't make us better and the quarter finals of major tournaments is probably about our level.

If the rankings were based on keeping the ball, passing to a team mate and getting shots on target. England would be below Scotland.

Brazil drop to 13th...their lowest ever ranking....all because they didn't win the Copa America and have no competitive games until 2014.

Apparently we've moved up because Uraguay's Copa America win, which was responsible for a healthy chunk of their rating, is now more than 12 months old and so it's weighting is reduced.

There's an alternative ranking system, called Elo Ratings (I'd never heard of it before looking at FIFA ranking on Wikipedia) and that has us at 5th, marginally behind Uruguay (2 points, 1950 v 1952) and just ahead of the Dutch (1940) and Argentinians (1934).

No but they've played 15 friendlies in the last 12 months.

Losing their last two, to Mexico and Argentina, hasn't helped.

The idea that England might be rated the 3rd best team in the world is pretty funny.

Actually no. It's fcuking hilarious.

Oh come on, after the last debate about FIFA World Rankings we all understand how they do it, but it is pretty amusing (= funny) that anyone could, in their right mind, believe that England are the 3rd best footballing nation in the world.

I don't believe there is ANYONE who actually believes that to be the case.

Do you?

I think it's a relatively pointless ranking that a lot of people get worked up about. Sure, there are probably 7 or 8 teams you would expect England to lose to, but based on those rankings, we're clearly better at beating the lesser sides. If we weren't, we'd be 8th or 9th.

That's good then.

I think they changed the points system about 5 years ago - it's a load of old bollox really but I can't imagine there's been a situation that has caused more of a head-in-hands, we-need-to-revisit-this-again sigh than the current ranking for England.

Albert Spangler What's the lowest ranked team to win the world cup?

On the basis that not having to qualify appears to result in a lower ranking, probably one which didn't have to qualify beforehand - England and Argentina (1978 version) would be contenders.

Least accomplished team to win the World Cup might be West Germany in 1954.
