But to the family and friends of Sir Alex, Gazza or Gary Lineker - and, by extension, the countless football supporters who know and love/respect them - surely any tribute means a lot less if there's one every match?
No, why would it? If I happen to be at a match in the future and want to pay some respects or admiration to Gazza, I don't see why that would be impacted because there was another applause for someone who worked for the club for 40 years.
I don't get why this would bother anyone. It's like having a problem with postmen wearing shorts.
But we're usually not talking about someone who worked for the club for 40 years - that's part of football and I'd be happy to celebrate their achievements.
It's being asked to applaud some anonymous person who I know nothing about who I'm told happened to support the same football club as me that feels forced and insincere to me. I feel a fraud because I know whatsoever about them and their life so my clapping along feels meaningless and insincere. If it makes other people happy then fair enough, but I know it wouldn't make my loss any less to have numerous unknown strangers clapping for the life of someone completely unknown to them.
Doesn't particularly "bother me", though. The question was posed on this discussion forum, so I gave my thoughts as part of that discussion. Didn't start a thread, rasie the topic or call for them to be banned, just said that I'm not a great fan of them.
