I'm not sure what the point of your argument is as no-one's claiming that it was the most prestigious competition in the world, but obviously your post is not correct as Everton frequently entered the competition. It's also worth noting that the year when Martin Hicks went up to lift the Simod Cup, Reading defeated 3rd placed Nottingham Forest, the eventual League Cup winners, Luton Town, and the then holders of the FA Cup, Coventry City (although given the paucity of the opposition faced by the Sky Blues in the Final, perhaps that adds only a little lustre to Reading's achievement).
