Fair play to them, they have realised the importance of the rankings and have made the most use of them as possible. Playing hardly any friendlies has certainly helped their cause.

How the phuck does that work anyway? Not qualified for a major tournament for half a century yet ranked ninth. Don't get me wrong I love my adopted country but just shows what a headfuck FIFA and their ranking system are.

They've won a lot of games over the last 2-4 years, especially against teams above them in the rankings.

How are San Marino that bad? I reckon if they actually played most of the 20 or 30 teams above them they'd probably win.

My lot haven't even played a competitive game in 5 or 6 years. :|

It's been fully explained many times but it is based over a 4 year cycle with weighting given to recent results over older results. Tournament results outrank qualifiers which in turn outrank friendlies so they are also weighted accordingly.

Wales have done well recently in qualifiers and tied in with weaker results from 4 years ago disappearing they have moved significantly up the rankings. Where they have been particularly smart is by not really playing friendlies as if they play a better country than them and lose, it will knock the ranking as even would beating a weaker side.

Wales have used the system perfectly with an eye on improving their ranking and pot placing for future draws and hence improve their changes of actually getting to the Euro's and the next World Cup. So far, so good.

The squad looks better than it has been for a while.

I thought the '02 ish era team was unlucky not to qualify for something and it rapidly fell apart, they had teams with no top flight players in the middle of the noughties.

I don't understand how Romania have gotten so high up the rankings? Can't recall them being in a major tournament for donkeys years or beating anybody of note?

Wales and Scotland, Ireland, Nor Ire should have benefited massively from the Academy system in the UK and too bloody right. As countries go we are very closely linked with lots of movement so this should have narrow the gap in terms of ranking, as we English clubs are producing lots of players that are at a reasonable level e.g. lower prem, championship.

Wales have been very clever and taken full advantage of this. Scotland somehow haven't.

For England to progress we need to crack the "WORLD CLASS" bracket more regularly which are the hardest players to produce..

Probably took a look at Engerlunds pathetic, turgid sh1t boring efforts in tournaments they've qualified for over the last 15 years and thought "Wales are much better watch with Bale and Ramsay than England with those usual underachievers of Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney."

The current Irish squad is complete dogshit.

Only player that would challenge for a spot on England team would be Coleman

Turgid performances are fine from Wales, it's England that have to win with style.

Where would Wales be though without Bale or Ramsey though?

They may not be losing every game but they'd sure draw a lot more than they win.

Indeed we have always had the odd world player in recent times but for England there is no excuse. There are a lot of players on big money who rate highly yet never do it. And not all of that has been the managers fault.

We did reach the last 8 in 1976 of the Euros. Never gets mentioned.

You did but the format of the tournament then meant the 'finals' were only made up of the semi finback and final hence why it gets ignored.

If Wales beat Israel on Sunday, they are guaranteed to be ranked 4th in the world in the October rankings.
