Infantino announces that the Confederations support the 48 team World Cup.

It's going to happen isn't it and probably be bloody awful.

32 teams is more than enough. Even then the sheer logistics of hosting that many teams doesn't bear thinking about let alone 48.

But then you know what'll be next, every finals tournament will be hosted by more than one country in a region (thus doubling the amount of "interest" in selecting those host nations in one fail swoop - and England still won't get them).

By the way has there been any more news on the ongoing investigations into the awarding of the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 world cup finals as yet or, as suspected, will we never hear anything about that again....

So, 48 team World Cup approved from 2026.

16 groups of 3, with the top 2 going through to the round of 32. There are even seriously looking at bringing in penalty shoot-outs for all drawn games in the group stage to stop sides playing last from "arranging" a result to ensure they both qualify. 80 games in 32 days.

You would think that following the relative mediocrity of the expanded Euros that they would learn but as there is a probably extra $550m to be made...

What a total joke FIFA are turning the finals into. 16 groups of 3 :roll

Then there's the cretinous proposal to decide draws with a penalty shoot out.

Nothing to do with more money for them of course.

Top European football managers and Slaven Bilić respond. I like Christian Gourcuff's description of "the worst crap I have read in a long time" as "immeasurable bullshit."

Is that a result of him heading balls for all those years or just the fact he's Dutch and has been partaking of some cafe "entertainment"

Interesting collection of suggestions.

The first is mindblowingly stupid. The last is a desperate attempt to make even more money out of football by allowing for more adverts. The others are pretty decent.

It's a sandwich of some decent (non-revolutionary) ideas but in a bun made of shit.

I think the offside rule is one of the things that keeps the wolves from the door. Beautiful rule.

Sin-bins for yellow-card offences in football could be given the go-ahead as early as next month.

Football's law-making body Ifab will look at the proposal at its annual meeting in London in March.

The measure has been tested in Uefa development competitions and some amateur leagues in recent years.

If approved, sin-bins will come in at youth and amateur levels and could be introduced to the professional game within two to three years.

I don't want sin bins!

How has it been implemented in the junior and amateur games?

I guess I can see some value in two yellows not necessarily making a red (though even that's fraught with problems) but yellow = 5/10 minutes off the pitch will just kill the game as a spectacle as the team going a man down will just sit back for the duration.

I get sin bins in ice hockey where going a man down makes it so much harder to defend (so much so that the penalty is cancelled after a goal is conceded) but in a game like football where chances can be few and far between I just can't see it working.

Time wasting would be taken to new extremes if sin bins were brought in

I get why they are looking to change things as a Yellow card is just too generic for a wide range of offences. BUt I don't think sin bins are the answer.

Automatic one match ban for dissent would be a better start. two if you do it again, etc. Likewise for diving.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

FIFA should stop ******* about in these things and address what does matter like their perceived utter incompetence and the fact no one that matters has any faith or trust in them any more.

Just for the record don't they have sin bins in rugby though? Does that detract from the game at all?

Space is controlled differently in Rugby. As said above teams would
likely fallback for the duration of a football sin bin. In rugby it's going
to leave a gap somewhere

It would leave gaps though as red cards do now. With sin bans, teams would just spend more time in training working on switiching formations for the 10 mins that they have a man up to look to overload in one area to create space for the extra man elsewhere. Teams would simply find the best way to play in those situations.

I wouldn't bring it in for all yellow card offences, but for the likes of decent, diving and some forms of professional foul i.e. deliberate tugs on shirts to stop breakaways - then an orange card could be shown leading to 10 mins in the bin. 2 yellows still equal a red, as do 1 yellow and 1 orange.
