Their capacity is higher you mug. Chelsea always fill a larger percentage of their ground than the two teams you've mention.

For once I agree with HaroLOLd - which I why I laughed when we were in the Premiership and away fans used to jeer at the attendance announcement.

In RFC's 1st Premiership season we had something like the 3rd or 4th highest average in percentage terms.

This season, Chelsea have the 2nd highest Premiership average (percentage terms) behind Arsenal. Man Utd are 4th and Newcastle and Citeh are 13th and 14th respectively. [url=http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/PR/attend.html]Link/url]

There is an error in the attendance of the Chelsea - West Brom game. Football 365 have listed it as 43417, whereas Chelsea's official site have 41437. The former figure is nearly 2,000 above the listed capacity of Stamford Bridge, so it sticks out like a sore thumb.

With the corrected total attendance of 540411 spread over 13 home games, Chelsea's actual average this season is 41570, which is 98.8% of capacity, and so just below Spurs in third (98.9%), and just ahead of Man Utd (98.7%). Those figures are so close they could easily change after the next home game, so probably not really worth waving any willies about.

Stamford Bridge has only been full to capacity week in, week out since Roman appeared on the scene. Strange that...

Granted - it was more aimed at the comment regarding Newcastle (91.3%) and Citeh (90.6%) than anything else.

Given that Chelsea don't fill Stamford Bridge the % figures aren't really worth comparing are they ?

The size of the stadium isn't stopping them getting bigger crowds.

So 95% of a 60,000 stadium is a better attendance than 98% of a 40,000 stadium

Except of course in each case the missing % may be down to away allocations, safety measures, corporate seats etc etc

They want to, but it's difficult to find a site for a new Ground. The infrastructure around Stamford Bridge won't allow them to make it any bigger.

Why expand when they struggle to sell out now on a regular basis?

I think you'll find most games are pretty much sold out. Same with most top sides. Man Utd, Arsenal etc...There is always a 'slight' variation in attendances. If they moved to a bigger ground of say 55,000 I am sure the attendances would always be around the 54,900 mark for PL games. Sometimes slightly more, sometime slightly less.

So I really don't get your point. It would be different if the attandances were 10k below capacity. But they're not.

NEXT.

went to see the NY Knicks the other week. They gave out free Knicks t-shirts. All the top clubs give out quality merchandise. Then there is Reading where you get a free piece of card. Top stuff.

The Evening Standard ads must be doing the business then.

As things stand the ground is plenty big enough. Without Champions League football next season the Glory Hunters will move on and Chelsea will be back to their traditional levels of support.
