I get it’s almost impossible to reject an offer from such a big club so close to his own heart but it’s done his career no favours

are a few that have done ok.
I do take the point though and have always felt that those who have been really good players do struggle with players less gifted, as in why the oxf*rd can't you do that?

I recks my list would be a lot longer than yours

Not sure I buy the less gifted argument. They can play football but are not necessarily good at analysis of football (and whatever else management takes)

That was more or less my point-they were so good themselves at playing that they didn't have to think much about the game and don't get why players find things difficult.

Mourinho, Klopp, Ferguson, Paisley, Wenger etc. come into the thinker (and successful) category having not been top players.

Who would have thought that a not very good manager, would not be very good there.

Or probably more accurately, who would have thought that somebody who only got jobs because of the player he was, would not be a very good manager. Am sure he'll go on to have a long and distinguished career as a pundit.

I always have the feeling that a decent dose of luck early on (plus avoiding basket case clubs) helps considerably in establishing credentials / reputation / confidence.

Got Sean Dyche written all over it. Bielsa the favourite, but would be too much of a change at this stage of the season.

John Yems, everyone. Apparently "not conscious racism" according to the FA's disciplinary investigation.

Probably their best manager since Moyes.

Possibly

But then I don’t think he’s been as bad overall as is made out. Sure, he had talented youngsters at Derby but he still did well to integrate them all together. How many highly rated youngsters have failed in the Championship?

He did OK at Chelsea before one disastrous month caused him the sack

He had one season at Derby and took a better team that the one the year before, to exactly the same spot and only got the Chelsea job as they were unable to spend any money and essentially needed someone the kids would look up to. If he is going to have a decent managerial career, he (and proably Gerrard) will need to take a step down and probably bring a club up to PL.

Don’t think Gerrard has been too bad, comfortably did what was expected at Rangers and made some decent calls in the transfer market but like many better managers couldn’t hack it with a middling side with deluded expectations playing in proper football. Still I think he left Villa a stronger side than when he joined them.

Agreed harsh on Gerrard although new manager has shown it might of been a "him" problem.
