Best black manager?

by TBM » 08 Sep 2011 12:16

The Professional Footballers’ Association is investigating the possibility of forcing clubs to put black candidates on shortlists for managerial vacancies.

Was thinking, who is the best black manager out there? - which black man would make a good manager?

One of the better ones in recent years was Keith Alexander (RIP).

Chris Powell seems like a decent bloke and has got Charlton going well. I think he'll be a decent manager in time. His only trouble is he might be too nice. I think a manager still needs that fear factor a little bit.

i'm sure in the years to come more black managers will be in jobs in England. Mainly down to there being a lot more black players than there were 15 years + ago.

As ever though it should be best man for the job and not because the guy is black or white that he has to get the job. Which is why I'm against this 'has to be a black person on the nominee list' If you're good enough or have the right qualifications then you'll be considered. Maybe naieve but I really don't think there is any racism at that level in football. Moronic fans around the world definitely. Boardrooms in England i don't think so.

Disgraceful. I can not see how this could be lawful. There is only one form of "positive discrimination" that is legal and that is where a job is given to someone on the grounds of disability.

Since when is insisting on at least one black candidate on a short list the same as giving them the job? Maybe if it said "black-only" shortlists. But it doesn't.

Tony Le Mesmer Johnson, Johnson Hippolyte

^End of thread.

I never think of Chris Hughton as 'black' tbh. I'd always describe his skin colour as 'meditteranean'. Tbh, we probably do need more properly coloured managers to avoid misunderstandings like this.

Why make them a candidate because they're black :?: Surely making them go through the same procedures as a white man isn't seen as Ray Cist.

Look at all levels of football. There are hardly any Black managers and lots of Black players. Keep it quiet, but that just might be because Black people make better players than they do managers.

More black players now - probably more black managers in the future compared to fewer black players 20 years ago - fewer black managers now. Fairly simplictic reasoning, that and also a lot of top professionals won't even bother with management, why do they need to do it? already millionaires. Most managers now didn't have that luxury when their playing days finished, Management or coaching was pretty much the only option within football. Sky have changed that now.

From my local football experience the black players tend to have the attitude of its win or nothing - which is good but they just cant accept defeat which isn't good if you want to be a manager.

Simon Chandler is doing a good job at Wrightchoice, so hopefully a few of them will follow his lead - drop the attitude and help get other black people in to management at grass roots upwards.
