A campaign to allow football fans to drink alcohol in their seats at matches for the first time since the mid-1980s has been launched by leading Championship club Ipswich Town.

I dont understand why you can't - still shut the bar during the game but instead of having to down your pint 2mins before kick off, just take it to your seat and actually enjoy it

IN for this much more than for safe standing

I didn't know this part of the law

"Supporters are banned from drinking in their seats during games, or “within sight of the pitch” 15 minutes before kick-off, under a law passed in 1985 that specifically restricted the sale and consumption of alcohol at football matches."

Who's up for a mass attempt to have a pint in our seats at 2.30?

I'm actually against this.

Could you imagine 1000 fans stood with pints and suddenly theres a goal. You'd be covered in beer, and it'd go all over the floor. Fooook that. Just down it in 5 minutes - it's part of the whole experience.

I'm all for safe standing but whilst majority will be fine having a pint or 2 during a match you know there will be some idiots who ruin it for everyone. Clubs should focus on decent beer first of all!

Will not happen unless it increases a clubs revenue, so it would need to be sold during the game as well, otherwise there is nothing in it for the clubs.

Would also spoil my attempt for a three pint half time each match.

Anyway, just do what i do and pour it into a couple of empty coffee cups, that i wash out and take home with me

You can then enjoy the beer whilst they think its a coffee

That's cunning.

I buy a pint just as the match re-starts. I then drink a bit and hide it tactically in the toilet areas, then every few minutes I run down for a bit more drink.

Are you ever surprised that there's sometimes more in the glass than your previous visit, and it's a bit warm?

You’re allowed to drink at your seats at matched in Germany and it’s flipping brilliant. Big plastic steins of beer that you get €1 off if you return the stein from your previous drink.

Given the massive reduction in trouble in football matches these days, there should be no reason why this ban isn’t lifted. Of course it won’t be though.

We've all seen absolute morons at football. Don't need to fuel them up during a game. Beers are shit at grounds anyway so why would anyone 'enjoy' one during a game!?

If you want to enjoy your pint then go to a CAMRA convention

Does anyone go to football expect a Michelin star level meal from the burger van?

Yes please and safe standing.

I watched the U16's or whoever at the MadStad after the promotion parade last season.
Me and my mate stood in the N/W corner leaning on the white safety barriers with a pint each. Bliss.
We actually had another and at no point did I feel like storming the pitch et al.
The only thing that would have bettered that would be a ciggy in the other hand.

So, safe standing, beer and smoking section please.

I'm no beer snob but its worse than your average pub quality at a high price! Not just one ground but all of them! It doesn't help that there is hardly any pubs within walking distance at Reading.

Some clubs take advantage of lack of pubs by having huge beer tents tagged onto the ground. It's not great but its better than nothing! Would ease demand slightly on people wanting a half time pint for sure

And as for the food...

At Man City last month they had 5 different beers on tap inside the concourse and the Heineken was no worse than you would get in a pub
