Joleon Lescott

by The 17 Bus » 05 Jun 2009 19:27

story in tonights crap EP that Coppell wanted to pay £4m for lescott on our promotion to the Prem, but as soon as Everton came in for him we had no chance and the deal was off- Interesting i thought, so Coppell wanted to replace Shorey after all, and he could have covered at CB as well.

I would assume that was the second palyer we wanted to pay that sort of money for, but would not come to little Reading.

I thought we knew that we'd gone for him at the time, and that it was likely he'd come until Everton popped up.

To replace Shorey? Centre back, surely.

i thought his best position was CB, but could also play LB??? hence why shorey was so livid that lescott got chosen over him for england, when shorey was the only natural LB left in the squad who wasnt injured

He covers left back, but he's a centre back. The 17 Bus is on the aftershave again this evening.

Which confirms JL is a centre back first and covers left back second. It just says a lot about how little McClown thought of Shorey, even after his impressive debut against Brazil.

Yes. I'm sure if needed we would have played JL at left back, but not as a first choice position, and certainly not dropping someone of Shorey's ability. That's crazy chitta chatta.

Unless of course it could have been that Coppell was not too happy with Shorey, and did not see him as a prem player!!!!

How could he not have been happy? Shorey never let us down. He was immense.

Put the Old Spice down.

That's after JL went to Everton. But yes, he let us down that season. They all did to be honest. Coppell would never have even thought about dropping Shorey around the time we looked at JL.

Ask Coppell. But you don't buy a fecking centre back, and a bloody good one at that and drop you left back!

That's right, completely change a system that we all know and brought us 106 points the previous season.

Following SSC's comments about Ivar I think that it is fairly obvious that JL would have taken Sonko's place. Sonks got away with his limited ability in the Championship but was too often found out in the Prem. How many pens did he concede?

Either, he is significantly better than both. It also would have meant we had 3 quality centrebacks for the Prem. Two just isn't enough.

Old news, well reported at the time.
