Johnstone's Paint Trophy - Vacated!

by Stooper » 15 Jun 2009 17:44

The Board of The Football League has ruled that Luton Town's relegation to the Blue Square Premier will prevent the Hatters from defending the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in this season's competition. The winners of the cup competition for clubs in Leagues 1 and 2 of The Football League had made a special application to the Board asking for permission to take part following their dramatic 3-2 victory over Scunthorpe United in April's Final.

The Football League's Head of Communications, John Nagle, explained: "Luton Town's application to play in the 2009/10 Johnstone's Paint Trophy has been turned down by the Board following detailed consideration.

"Whilst, the Board acknowledges that this particular set of circumstances is likely to happen very rarely, it would set a precedent for winning clubs that are no longer in Leagues 1 or 2 to take part in the competition in the following season.

"It is reasonably likely that a future winner will also gain promotion to the Championship in the same season and in the Board's view this competition should remain the exclusive domain of League 1 and 2 clubs."

The 2009/10 Johnstone's Paint Trophy will kick-off in the week commencing August 31.

Good call. In the season 1988-9, we weren't allowed to defend the Simod Cup...

When we played Barnet in the AW in 01/02 weren't they in the Conference?

Sad that Luton's triumph in an otherwise miserable three seasons has been glossed over.

Various attempts have been made to solve the problem of reducing the 48 lower-division clubs to a round power of two (which is required for a knockout tournament): often the first round of the cup was played in round-robin groups of three; at other times the more senior clubs have been given byes into the second round. The addition of 8 or 12 (rather than 16) teams from the Conference (from 2000-01 to 2005-06) has not solved this problem. This season, 16 teams of the bottom two League divisions will receive byes, and the remaining 32 will play the first round in four regional sections.

Strange Liverpool could defend there Champions league despite finishing 5th the season they won it. They rested players in league games to win the cup, so that compramised there league position, and by rights should not have been allowed to defend the trophy.

Congratulations Jay, you've managed to make yourself look an utter prick in the face of Spacey's most relevant post since records began. Our non-defence of the Simod Cup is exactly the same as Luton's situation here, actual divisions notwithstanding

Liverpool generate money for UEFA - Luton dont do anything worthwhile, bar cheat, for the FA!

Not saying its right, but its the truth.

Yep - If Liverpool are allowed to defend the Champions League despite not qualifying then Luton should be able to defend the JPT.

Yup they finished 5th in the Conf that season 17pts behind Boston, had been relegated the season before.

Gubbed us 4-1 in the Southern Area 1/4s then lost to eventual runners-up Cambridge Utd in the next round.

...there were 8 Conference sides 'invited' to participate that season.

...Oh and by then it was the Leyland Daft again - though more commonly referred to as the LDV Trophy (assumed it was roughly the same thing?) - seems to have had the full moniker in a previous instance from 89-91. Autoglass sponsorship ended in 2000.

Run by the same league, with very similar and distinct rules on who can enter - ie it's exactly the same situation.

What Stranded said. I was citing an example of something similar happening, so Luton couldn't complain. The fact that it is a different competition doesn't really disprove my point.
