Ian Royal I just don't think we really want him.

You clearly feel we need 3 centre backs.

Exactly!! 4 recognised CB's is a must for a long hard season. Lets not forget we currently only have 2 fit CB's at the moment, Ingimarson could easily break down again as he tries to return to full fitness.

id qualify that:i just dont think we want him if we are going to have to pay, in transfers/wages what ammounts to too much for our 3rd choice CB
and thats fair enough imo.

if he was free, and would fit into the wage structure, then fine, wed want him

No, I don't.

I think we need another centreback. I'm not sure McDermott does. And it's pretty obvious if he does, Zurab isn't the one he wants.

So if we wanted him we'd want him? But we don't want him so we don't want him?

It's all tied in. Of course we'd want him if he was going to be cheap. He's good. He's just not sufficiently better than what we've already got to justify spending the amount we'd need to. So either we'll go for someone else or we'll go with what we've got.

Personally I think Mills and Pearce will be good enough for this season, and probably won't miss a huge number of games.

I appear to have missed something. When did we sign him?

Because until we do, or make a serious attempt at it, then there's absolutely nothing to say I've got that wrong.

Just for the retarded masses, there is a difference between saying I don't think we really want him, and we shouldn't sign him, or don't need him.

IMO we have needed a new centreback all pre-season, because Pearce is a flawed player and Ingimarsson is injured and on the decline. That doesn't mean McDermott necessarily agrees with that.

I'm not sure that player is Khiz or not, to be perfectly honest I'd prefer someone with a bit more pace so we don't end up with a defence utterly devoid of speed as soon as Mills is out.

If anything was proved by today's game it's that we desperately need to sign Khiz. He was a class act last season and would bring some much needed stability to the defence. Plus the fact that we need have only one match fit centre-back now that Mills is injured. The deal makes sense, low fee, Blackburn want rid and he'd like to come back. I suppose the only possible stumbling block could be his wages.

At this level Khiz knows exactly what to do and when to do it. We need to get him in alongside Mills.

I'm hoping that if Mills is injured it might force our hand a little bit to get him in.

I hope his wage demands aren't too high, but something has to be putting us off.

I don't care who it is and I hope that Mills isn't serious, but I agree I hope it gives McDermott enough of a fright to bring someone in. Khiz would do, but someone of a similar standard with pace would be better.

Someone of Zurab's standard or Premier League standard? I'd have Zurab like a shot if he was still available. He knows the team, he knows the manager, he knows what works and he had a great partnership with Mills.

Word on the street is that his wage demands are way out of our price range ... last season we only paid a proportion of his actual wages so we could afford him. Even taking a cut he's too expensive, so we pretty much need to look elsewhere.

I see Khiz as a bit better than Pearce and about the same as Ivar, but not necessarily on the decline like he is. I'm not after a Premier League standard player. If we could get someone of a bit lesser quality, but who had pace and balance, I'd take them over Khiz, especially if they were cheaper.

For me it's not just about buying the best player, it's about bringing in the player with the attributes that best compliment what you've got, and who's weaknesses are least exploitable because of what you've already got.

I've been saying for a month or more it doesn't look like we're interested in him anymore. I think the club has even said it. And yet I still get told I'm stupid for saying it because people saw him play last season and automatically think he's the only answer because we haven't been linked elsewhere. Well I'll take my bashing if we sign him, that's fair enough. But until we do, suggesting I'm an idiot for thinking that is a touch premature.

Not suggesting that's what you've done RL.

Ian, you really need to get to more games. The CB partnership of Mills and Zurab was one of the main reasons we escaped relegation last season. Zurab really is that much better than Ivar. Do you remember when we had Micky Nutton play alongside Michael Barnes in the 1980s? Barnes, all of a sudden looked world class. It was Nutton who brought him on. THe same with Zurab and Mills.

Really? Well I bow to your superior knowledge despite Mills and Khiz only started three league wins for us (with one draw and three losses). Whereas of course, Mills and Ingimarsson went unbeaten with five wins and one draw.

So that's 25% of our league wins under McDermott and 75% of our league losses for this partnership that was one of the main reasons we survived.

But then of course you'd know that, because you went to more games than me.
