ZacNaloen How would he have sold Mills?

Does Hammond report to the manager or something?

I thought they worked "together"

That's the point - BR wasn't "working together" with anyone. He was working on his own and telling everyone else - even those at very senior positions - what they had to do for him.

And you can only be an autocrat like Mourinho when your team has the same resources (and results!) as Mourinho had.

FiNeRaIn Mills...sold for 5 million. Rodgers made the club 3 mill profit.

My understanding is that Brian calls the football shots as regards the 1st team squad. If he wants a player he identifies that to Nick Hammond who then works with Brian and the board to see whether a deal can be struck

Now, yes, and under Coppell. But not under BR

FiNeRaIn Rodgers wasn't just removed due to poor results, he actually had the audacity to ask for more money to spend on players as the squad was weak and we didn't get the striker we wanted. Madejski decided this didn't follow the yes man trend he was looking for and removed him.

maybe he should have checked the budget before blowing a totally ridiculous 2 million on mills

Yes, but as Hoop says that wasn't really his signing. It was more a McD/Hammond signing as we'd already made contact with Mills in May before Rodgers had even been appointed. Or at least he was aware of our interest in him at that point. Certainly got that impression from an interview with Mills that i read shortly after he arrived.

Svlad Cjelli Do we really have to cover all this ground about why (and precisely when ) he was sacked all over again ......?

Briefly, he was sacked for 2 main reasons :

- wouldn't take advice or assistance from in the club, was determined to do everything "his way" and so pissed off too many people in important positions;
- was going to sell Mills in January at cut-price, because Mills was standing up to him in the dressing room and saying that the players didn't understand what they were being told to do. Sacked 2 weeks before transfer window opened.

:| Pass the ball? Is it really such a task for professional footballers to try to change the way they play?

Has not Mills subsequently proved himself to be a Billy-BIG-Bollocks that you all hate?

Mills is a billy-big-bollocks, but McDermott managed him well. Rodgers managed him badly. You know what they say about tents?

It wasn't "pass the ball". We'd spent two or three minutes passing it along the back. In our first home match (against Nottingham Forest), the ball would go from Federici to Pearce to Cisse to Bertrand to Karacan to Cisse to Pearce to Federici to Bertrand to Cisse to Pearce to Karacan to Rosenior... and then Rosenior had to audicity to pass to Robson-Kanu and got bollocked for it. It was the worst football I've seen us play. We had very little penetration. Over time, it improved as McAnuff and Sigurdsson came into the side, but those two were winning matches on their own rather than the system winning matches.

When McDermott came in we were still playing passing football, but it was fluid, the system was winning matches.

Rodgers has learnt from his mistakes and has more penetration with you, though you're still boring when Dyer or Sinclair isn't on the ball. No different to most teams (ourselves included) in that.

Can't have been that weak. It finished 9th with little money spent and no new strikers.

To be fair, didn't Rodgers actually sign him before he left? He just wasn't official until January.

IIRC he was another long term club target so the interest may not have come directly from Rodgers but he was involved before the sacking.

Not that I wanted to ruin the 'joke' of course.

Can anyone help me? I'm looking for a thread in which Finerain isn't getting roasted. Fun as it is to watch, the Déjà vu is making me a bit queasy and putting me off my Lion Bar.

BR brought him in and realised he made a mistake.
Sven bought him and is realising he made a mistake.

The important filling in this gaffe-sandwhich is McDermott, a high-profile goal, and a lazy bottomless wallet.

Matt Mills wasn't worth 2m, let alone 5.

Totally agree on the last line.

McDermott has to shoulder some of the blame for bringing Mills into the club (as well as for getting more out of him of course) as he seems to have gained a lot of credit for bringing in the players that have been successes at the same time.

We'd been watching Mills for sometime too, so it wasn't just a Rodgers thing.
