They can cough up £5m then. To be honest, where ever he ultimately goes, he could quite possibly be the next Steven Gerrard. He's going to the top, with or without us.

Apart from being a totally different sort of player to Gerrard you mean?

Both tall, strong, can influence the pace of a game, creative, attacking, and both weigh in with goals? Nothing at all alike.

Royal_Delight P.S Reading has been rather poor in replacing players for the past few seasons. Eg. Cisse for Sidwell, Thorvaldsson for Doyle.

Thorvaldsson as Doyle's replacement? I'd say Long or even Church would be better suggestions. Pro-active replacement is still replacement.

Can't confirm it but didn't Rogers and the club said that he was similar to Doyle. They also said that he could give us the dimension that we lack when Doyle left. :D

I'm not sure that means we signed him as a direct replacement for Doyle though. It's pretty common that when you sign a player you relate him to other players who have played for you.

Jimmy Kebe is NOT the long awaited replacement for Michael Gilkes !!

When they say we didn't sign player X because we already had player Y in the squad and they're too similar to have both and then sign player X after player Y leaves, I think it's a fair assumption to say he's pretty much a direct replacement.

Obviously Thorvaldsson isn't half the player Doyle was though, and as it turns out our existing players were better than him anyway. He was still a replacement in the squad, just not a good enough one to break into the team!

Agreed! Lets cream ourselves over a single performance in a PRE SEASON FRIENDLY!

What a nice person you are. Firstly, that's the last time I've seen him play hence why i mention it, haven't seen him play on loan for Wycombe or Yeovil or Aldershot. Secondly we where playing against the team that look like they're going to win the premier league.

Presumably it was such 'a long time' after he left because the club felt they could replace from within, but then realised we couldn't (a combination of those already here not being good enough and Hunt's long term injury).

The length of time (only 4 or 5 months) doesn't really negate the similarities the club saw between them does it?

When we signed Doyle, it was either him or Thorvaldsson that was coming in, but Thorvaldsson was going to cost a lot more money. I can't remember his club, but they wanted more than what we paid for Lita

The fact that the only thing he's contributed since his time here was two sitters missed against forest says it all. Off in the summer.

He's hardly been given a chance.

He must be absolutely gutted having come here, probably with high hopes. Is he even playing regularly in the reserves?

Roberto Di Matteo is lining up a £2.5million bid for Reading ace Gylfi Sigurdsson.

West Brom boss Di Matteo is preparing for the Premier League and wants to raid Reading for the Iceland star this summer.

Sigurdsson, 20, has impressed in his first full season after scoring 16 goals with the Royals.

And Di Matteo will attempt to win the race to sign the midfielder ahead of Bolton, Wolves and Nottingham Forest.

To be fair, they might be looking at him as an option if they go up in the play offs, then it would be just a viable a move as West Brom or Wolves really.

Which players would you like to see us sign in the summer? (Maybe a HCDAJFU thread?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After reading an article on the echo website a few days ago about Pardew looking to build a squad in the summer which would be able to get promoted out of the Championship, it got me wondering who everyone realistically thinks we should aim to sign.

At the moment my brain has gone for a walk but one which springs to mind is Gylfi Sigurdsson, a young Icelandic central-midfielder currently playing for Reading. Box-to-box and can take a decent set-piece. Has also chipped in with 11 goals so far this season.

Can I just get this straight... They are currently in the playoffs of League 1, and their fans are already thinking of being promoted Out Of The Championship?

Come on don't kid yourself. If a club like Southampton came in, there is no way Sig could turn them down.

And Reading wouldn't stand in the lads way....
