andrew1957 I think Shane Long will have a good season next year and it won't surprise me if he gets 15 goals - I hope so because some on here are extremely negative about him. His scoring rate last year was actually quite good and he is only 22!!

If we sold him for £2M and he scores 15 for Coventry that would really rub it in. If we were buying a player who was 22 and had scored 9 Championship goals lat year in 13 starts plus sub appearances - people would be raving about what a good signing we were making. It is just that the lad has been here for 4 years already and has not yet become a first choice striker but he was only 17or just 18 when he came.

That is such a good point - with that ratio it would be like, 'He's a proven goal-scorer at this level and he's already played for Ireland'. Also all nine as far as I remember were really good goals, not just tap-ins as several of the 18 Doyle scored. Although as they say, it is part of the talent of being a striker of being in the right spot at the right time. However, the reverse of that is that Doyle scored his 18 when we were at our creative best - most of Long's nine came when goals were at a premium and Doyle was shooting blanks (pardon the expression).

Can't believe the same debate about Long is starting up all over again.

I think he proved himself to be the best finisher at the club last season, with feet and head - if Rodgers can improve his first touch and develop a bit more of a poacher's instinct in him we will have a 20 goal striker on our hands.

I would be very surprised and disappointed if he goes to Coventry.

Me too...

I also believe that he has proven himself over the latter stages of the season.

But 2 million is a lot of money.

Think that's going overboard the other way personally. Remain unconvinced by Long, but he did come on leaps and bounds at the end of last season and I certainly think he's now ready to play a bigger part as maybe 3rd choice and get plenty of starts.

Of course that's assuming a 4-4-2. I'm not entirely confident with Long as a lone striker at all. Even with very advanced and attacking wingers. It's going to be an interesting old season.

Whatever our opinions of Long, it's make or break for him next season. Time to deliver.

After selling Doyle why on earth would we be looking at selling Long???

Next it will be Feds to Derby for 3mil or something.

Long will be important to us this season. He was out-performing Doyle towards the end of last season

I don't think I could make up my mind on Long without doing a bit of detailed statistical analysis first....

As for seeing his goals ratio and being pleased if we were trying to sign him, that would say a lot more about those posters than it would about his record.

The thing with Long, and any other player really, is that you need to see them play a few times to be able to judge them with any accuracy. I certainly wouldn't be scoffing at his record if he were a target of ours, but I wouldn't be getting too excited about it without having seen him play a few times.

If we were looking to spend £2m on him I'd be pretty gob smacked though!

Do you not recall Snowball's most enlightening stats?

Long is not as good an all-round player as Doyle, but his conversion ratio is significantly better.

The thing with Long is that if you give him a decent chance with little time to think about it he is a hell of a finisher.

He's scored some very good goals where he's taken the chance very clinically and shown that he can do it (the header he scored against Derby at the end of the promotion campaign was pure class) but ask he isn't as good at making a chance when he either has to do something in the box or make the most of a good ball, or a bad one for that matter, from a team mate.

I think probably means his chances are a little more clear cut, but then he also f*ucks up more good situations where someone like Doyle would end up getting a shot in. That works positively for his club stats conversion rate, but for Doyle it worked negatively as he'd end up getting more shots in, but they wouldn't be from such clear cut chances.

Long certainly is a good finisher at times though.

So, in summary - Long is not as good as some people think but not as bad as others are making out?
:?

I think Long is a decent forward because he has "quick feet", something that I think you are born with and not something you can teach.

What a good coach, and hopefully Brendan is just the person, can teach is positional awareness and getting in to the right areas on the pitch. If this can happen then I agree he could be as good as Kev.

He has the natural abiility required and fitness levels; he has filled out a great deal which helps his body strength. With a new approach through a more measured passing game I reckon Shane could kick on quite significantly next season.

Like Kev, he also appears to have the right attitude as well.
