RUMOUR: Elliott Benyon

Word in the west country is that we're on the verge of signing Benyon from Torquay, loan with a view to a permanent transfer

Would be an excellent signing. The guy is still young and impressed me on the few occasions I have seen him play.

If we signed him it would remind me of when we signed Kitson - there same sort of age, scored goals regularly at a lower level and keen to step up a level or two.

Look forward to AP's lowdown on the guy.....

McDermott did not hide his liking for O'Kane, Ellis and Benyon when his Royals were lucky to beat United 1-0 in extra-time in the Carling Cup in August.

This won't happen. He will be far too expensive for us and I very much doubt we can afford his wage demands. We need to look lower down the league pyramid.

Well thankfully Elliot is somehow still at TUFC despite having a host of clubs wanting to take him by all accounts.

When he first joined he was a decent finisher but little else. But he's older and wiser now, excellent movement, usually he's still decent in front of goal, his team play and work rate are absolutely first class and there is absolutely no doubt he'll play at a higher level, along with 3 or 4 of our new young side. Including Ellis and O'Kane. Both are stupidly good for League 2 level.

I think Championship would have been a big step for Elliot to take now and him playing every week scoring goals for TUFC is his best course of action rather than a panic transfer either to the likes of Dagenham who were interested or a place like Reading where he'd be sub at best.

When he goes i just hope TUFC get a fair fee because the last 2 or 3 players they've sold to bigger clubs have gone on the cheap.

Any more news on this rumour? Would be a cheaper option than Austin, but fits into the same bracket.

The only players I can think of in recent years to come up from the BSS, are Gareth McLeary (Bromley to Forest) and DJ Campbell (Yeading to Blackpool via many)

Don't know about recent years, but what about Tony Book, didn't he go from non-league to captaining Man City

and then there's a certain fantastic England full-back...

PLENTY of non-leaguers have made it big in the league, and Reading have often been involved!

PSYCHO!

Stuart Pearce 176 non-league appearances then 570 appearances in the pro-ranks and 58 more for England.

failed a trial at QPR and then rejected an offer from Hull City played for Wealdstone, while training and working as an electrician and plumber. For almost five years, was the first choice full back the team, then amongst the biggest names of non-league football in the Alliance Premier League. Evenbtually bought by Coventry, then Forest. The rest is history.

Tony Book played for Frome, then Bath City, Toronto! Then finally UK league side Plymouth at age THIRTY. (He had doctored his birth certificate to say he was 28)

81 games there then he moved to Manchester City. The foloowing season he became captain and led City to win the title. In 1969 he was joint Footballer of the Year with Dave McKay and a week later City won the FA Cup with him as captain. He made 242 appearances for City STARTING at age 32 and is their most successful-ever captain

ALAN PARDEW. Was a window fitter played for Whyteleaf, Corinthian Casuals, Dulwich Hamlet, Yeovil before finally being bought by Palace aged 25 and eventually made the top flight and an FA Cup final.

Kerry Dixon. Rejected by Spurs. Played for Chesham then Dunstable, then READING then Chelsea where he got 193 goals. 4 goals for England in 8 appearances.

Les Ferdinand. Southall, Hayes, QPR and England. 14 goals in the Prem aged 37

Stan Collymore. Stafford Rangers – Palace – Southend – Forest – Liverpool – Villa

Kevin Phillips, dumped by Southampton for being too small, played for Baldock Town (and stacked shelves for a living) … spotted by Watford – then Sunderland and a 30-Goal prem season

Steve Guppy. Went semi-pro with non-League Wycombe aged 23, made the league with them then signed by Newcastle, then top of the top division. Left for Port Vale then rejoined ONeill at Leicester and won the League Cup. Also played for Oneill at Celtic. Once considered the best crosser of the ball after Becks.

John Aldridge. South Liverpool to Newport County, (another club...) eventually Liverpool

Paul Parry Hereford to Cardiff. I watched him at Forest Green and recommended him to Tim Harris at Newport. He'd be ok now for RFC

DJ Campbell Yeading to Brentford/Birmingham/Leicester now Premiership

Jamie Mackie Exeter to Plymouth, now QPR and Premiership-Bound
