RUMOUR - Brett Pitman

by Victor Meldrew » 22 Dec 2009 18:06

Rumour in the local paper down here that we are amongst a number of clubs looking at him including Huddersfield and Plymouth.
Derby supposedly were looking at making an offer of around £800,000.
I haven't seen much of him lately but he is aggressive (previously too much so),young, with a reasonable physique (not a dwarf or weedy) and scores goals.

It's a long time since we bought a player from Bournemouth but we have lent them plenty so I presume our coaching staff will have seen a fair bit of him when keeping track of the loan players.
We do of course have Shane Long to loan out and as said on another topic he might appreciate what a great deal he has at Reading when experiencing life down in the old 4th division and return determined to prove himself again although I fear that he should really be playing Gaelic football.

Pitman would be a good signing, can't see us shelling out £800k for him though.

Sounds to me like football is not learning the financial lessons. 800k for a player of 21 is daft, we paid that for N Hunt, who had a good few goals at a higher level. Hunt was not a gamble, this lad is, sell on clauses maybe, but this is too much.

Clubs should look at their staff to see why they failed to get this lad on their scouting radar.

Because he's only hit form since Howe went there in mid-January this year - 15 of his 17 goals last season came under Howe and he's continued his good form this year.

I thought form was temporary, but class was permanent??

So what we need is a manager that can spot raw talent at Reading?????

In Pitman's case having watched Bournemouth games fairly regularly during his development, he was utter crap until the second half of last season, where he seemed to transform overnight into a world beater. Some of the goals he's scored this year have been crazy.

so that is the two goals that were actually 4 goals scored before Howe went there in Jan, I think i shall stick to BR2's views on Bmuff players.

Silly me for trusting their official website. I care not if you believe me, Pitman has only emerged properly this year and proven himself, which is why people were unaware of him before, plus of course he's only young.

I went to far less RFC games last season and tended to go and see Bournemouth whenever I could. He wasn't scoring for the first half of the season and he actually got quite a lot of stick off of their fans who were of the opinion he thought too much of himself and wasn't as good as he thought he was. I suppose the changes in management didn't help him with Bond and Quinn and the financial uncertainty, but almost overnight Howe seemed to turn him around! He still runs like a chicken though!

He's been on fire for Bournmouth so far this season, but as other posters have mentioned, I don't see us digging out 800k for a League 2 player.

On the point of scouting-I don't know how good the lad is but young Austin can't stop scoring for Swindon at the moment.
He was playing for Poole Town last season, that's about 3 levels below The Conference, and IIRC before that at Hungerford Town which isn't so many miles from Reading is it?
Not saying if he is any good but goalscorers are normally a rare and expensive breed however as Ian Wright and Les Ferdinand showed there is talent amongst the non-leaguers (Paul Canoville,DJ Campbell,Paul Mariner are a few more to come to mind).

Oh Sammy Igoe!

He did quite well last season in the games I saw, was nice to see him play again - always did his best and was a good servant to us at the time. During the times of real financial worry around pre-season 2008/09 half the team was made up of trialists following relegation and the club did well out of that with the likes of him and Mark Molesley coming in.
