SPECULATION - Alan Irvine

by rg6royal » 29 Dec 2009 14:41

Just been sacked as Preston Manager after only winning one of their last 10 games.

Could be worth a shout?

Preston have been a bit to hasty. Decent manager, who would be worth a shout here. Didn't we approach them in the summer?

This bit made me laugh:

"Irvine might be keen on a move to Reading as they are likely to have a bigger transfer budget than the one he has been used to."

Mirror obviously know oxf*rd all then don't they?! :D

Maybe you missed the date of the article - last May. Maybe it was true then.

Not a great believer in coincidence personally, but the fact that a tough, no nonsense, experienced manager of AI's calibre is available free gratis and for nothing is not something to ignore IMHO

Get him down to the Madstad double quick and insist that his back room team consists of BM et al and not a bunch of hangers on from his comfort zone, with a brief to stop the rot and galvanise what we've got, (augmented by what we need and can afford) into a team totalling more than the some of it's parts!

AI has a good pedigree for this kind of job!

Good pedigree? How?

Correct me if I'm wrong but Preston was his first managers job. He took over there when Billy Davis left and they where a play off team doing well. He's kept them ticking over relatively well to be fair to him, but that's different to the task at hand here.

Quite right, I'm referring to his no nonsense approach, he is acknowledged by Everton and other fellow professionals as being good at organisation, motivation and ensuring that his teams play to their advantages.

I believe the Championship demands, fit, athletic, organised and motivated players, playing percentage football with more application than the other team. There are a few players with exceptional skill, but for the most part effectiveness at this level is measured by doggedly determined results and not by flashes of genius or inspiration.

Our squad is not so bad if compared to our rivals, so the fault/remedy must lie within other factors, the sort that AI is reputedly good at resolving.

There are anti-relegation specialists around, (people like Harry Basset were good at that kind of thing) but AI could address the current shortfall in what I believe is largely a dispirit and not a bad team.

Who is Everton? Everton Weekes?

I'm sure Irvine is a bit of a organiser and and task master with it, and I'd agree the Championship is at times a very attritional league, but I don't see his record at Preston as being anything to give him a 'good pedigree for this type of job.'

To pick up on your view on the Championship though, I do believe it's a league where success is often won through hard work and good organisation, but the last few years it's seen a lot of success for good footballing sides with good players passing the ball well and having enough quality to produce something special against the masses of 4-5-1's and dogged workman-like sides.

In our situation we need a bit of both obviously, and to be honest, at the moment we don't really have either apart from 3 players capable of creating something from nothing (Sigurdsson, McAnuff and Matejovsky). The rest of the team don't seem to have the fortitude or physical presence or attributes to really compete in this division. With what seems to be a lack of opportunity to add to the squad getting someone in who can build a side to get the best out of the three I mentioned earlier, plus a new forward, will probably be our best bet for a mid table finish.

I would have no complaints if he was appointed - a steady head, similar to Coppell and shrewd in the transfer market.

Everton FC, for whom AI was a coach!

Apart from the disruptions of player sales, management changes, bad luck poor judgement, bizarre team selections etc, etc

The common denominator in the team's performance seems to be a lack of belief, confidence and effort/passion/application. They just don't appear to amount to more than the sum of their parts which is most clearly a management issue.

With respect, football and footballers are relatively simple, if you can get the basics right the style and virtuosity can eventually flourish.

Holloway and Blackpool are a prime example and who wouldn't settle for that right now?

To be honest I thought Irvine had PNE playing a lot better than they were last season. This year their lack of quality caught up with them.

Has he spent much? Does seem a touch harsh...

My first choice in the summer. Can't believe PNE's board think he can't turn the narrow defeats they've been suffering into enough victories to be pushing at the playoff places. Maybe they've panicked when hearing that others have been sounding out Fergie Jnr? A bit like Boro sacking Southgate when they found out Hull were sniffing around Strachan.

Anyway, I'm sure we're not in the running to get Irvine. It's MaccyD till the summer, and beyond, come what may now that Sir John has all but thrown in the towel on the club.

Latest odds - so if Irvine is Sheff Wed bound, then it looks like a two horse race with one already saying the other should get it!

Brian McDermott 5/4
Steve Coppell 3
Alan Irvine 9/2
Glenn Hoddle 6
Iain Dowie 7
Gareth Southgate 10

Sorry, I didn't realise we couldn't give opinions. Facts can be a bit boring sometimes - I just thought I'd stick my neck out for a change. I guess I should have been prepared to get my head bitten off as a result!
