Deathy
winchester_royal Rodgers will know if he's worth the money.

As I'm sure he did with Smith, but the lack of money seems to be a problem...

It seems to me as though Rodgers has Mr. Mad completely under his spell. If he wants a player he'll get him.

...if he's within the budget.

Of course.

I disagree with you on this one Deathy - I think BR has joined Reading knowing the kind of club we are. If he went to MrMad and said £1.8million would be a sound investment for this guy, then he'd get the money. I just think however much he rates the guy, he thinks it's too much money. And many on here seem to agree. Also, BR knows that even if he does go and ask for that kind of money, he's not going to be able to do the same again too soon. So, maybe he's decided he'll wait for something else?

That's a very well written reply.

If Smith goes for more than £1.5m, so will Priskin. Very much out of our reach, sadly.

You keep saying this, but we have parted with more in the past and we will in the future. JM is astute enough to know when he is being asked for too much and when the whole life cost of the deal is backbreaking. Don't forget that the full cost of a player includes his capitation for the duration of the contract - so it is entirely feasible for a 1.5m player (purchase price only) to come out more expensive over a 4 year contract than a 2.5M player will over a 3 year contract.

Im sure when he took the job, Rodgers was given a transfer budget and knows what his ex-players are worth, so wouldn't even be looking at them if he knew he didn't have the kitty....

Also the large text below could work in our favour:

The Hungarian has just one year remaining on his contract at Vicarage Road and is not sure whether the Hornets would like him to stay or go.

Or he knew what he was worth, but that wasn't as much as Sheff U were willing to stretch to...

If our chairman bloke speaks to him..

Priskin of the last 6 months would be quality for you.

Clearly a confidence player which Rodgers gave him.

Won't be an issue.
Nicky Hammond deals with transfer negotioations and your chairman was glowing in his praise for him over the managerial move.

We were in the Premiership. At this level, a £1m player made JM's eyes water and his wallet weep. We now have a wage bill we're trying desperately to reduce, and you think we can still bring players in in the region of £1.5m? Not going to happen.

course we can. Think of the money saved on Doyles weekly wage x52 plus the 6.5m we got for him then we can buy a player for 1.5 and offer him a fraction of the wages.

Well yes, but Mr Mad liked to keep his involvement quiet.

Yes with Lita pre-Premier league, but Sir John did then spend a good two months banging on about how it showed the ambition of the club etc etc...

Don't get me wrong I love the way the club is run and Sir John but I just wish at times, in the last two years in particular, he would be a bit more shy of making cringeworthy appearances in the media.

I would also tend to agree with those who would question the wisdom of paying £1.8m for a player with one year left on his contract, is slightly the wrong end of his career and proved with Derby and Watford that he is not necessarily going to have enough about him if we do manage to go back up any time soon. £1m yes possibly, £1.8m no.

I said that. :| "At this level, a £1m player made JM's eyes water and his wallet weep." I'm sure we could stretch to £1m again, and that'd be the vast majority of this summer's budget, but never will we spend something like £1.5m any time soon. Not when we have to drastically reduce this wage bill.

In case you've been away can I point out that we HAVE reduced the wage bill significantly in recent weeks....

Doyle, Duberry, Murty, Hahnemann, Lita - that is a BIG amount of wages no longer being paid out and with Hunt's chunk to go we'll be 100k a week better off all told.
