SPARTA Putting aside who is better, who is worse; both are out of contract in the summer. Of the two I can see Shorey getting a new contract, but we still need to bring another in. Joe Mills will hopefully be released after his fail at Burnley.


I can see Harte getting a coaching role at the club next year, he's obviously highly rated by BM. Thats if he wants one.

Shorey can go and do one after taking the piss out of the club for a second time.

Mills only ever looked impressive with his speed when stepping in for Harte, and lets face it, who wouldn't. But my 10 yr old son had better technical ability, no hang on, my 5 yr old girl did too.

No pace, players gliding in behind him, in front of him, everywhere. Should have signed a new left back in January, then we wouldn't have had to put up with endless inept performances from this 'experienced' player.

I can't see how he can defend such a useless player at this level.


He tries very hard to do so by posting loads of puncuation marks and rather coarse language and then makes a poor attempt at the "I'm a bigger fan than anybody else" by declaring that he has a few royalty points.
That supposedly is enough for everybody else to accept that whatever he says is gospel even though he seldom watches RFC play.
Oh,and he still holds a massive grudge towards Shorey and thinks that any body who dares to suggest that Shorey is a better option than Harte is just a **!!************************wa....r.
Such is the level of discussion offered by the taxi-man from the sticks.

Just confirm for me. We are talking about the same Ian Harte who has played at this level before, is a recognised international in a team that was successful and who has never had pace as a part of his game, aren't we?

If so, he is hardly out of his depth at this level. You may not like him and you may have the view that he is no longer able to compensate for his lack of raw pace but to suggest he is out of his depth is laughable.

Tony Le Mesmer Yet another goal from a Harte set piece. Kind of getting a bit redicluous how many goals weve scored from them in the last 3 seasons. His abscence from the team almost always coincides with a poorer run of results, set pieces are that important.

You can fairly criticise other aspects of his game at this stage of his career, but we have never had another player close to his ability from set pieces. To come out with comments like " no excuse for not clearing the first man" is just silly. This isnt Sunday League football. Just sticking in the mixer and hoping will achieve nothing almost all of the time. Its how many goals his set pieces yield, not how many come to nothing. The best corners are the ones that just clear the 1st man (like yesterday) and it goes without saying that a lot will fail to do so, otherwise you are giving yourself no chance. We score a huge amount of goals from his corners and free kicks and thats why he plays. End of. Without him we would have less points this season and wouldnt even be in this league to start with.


Caskey.

Harte's direct free kicks are excellent. The rest of his deliveries aren't a lot better than Shorey's or probably Guthrie's either.

We've scored a lot of our goals from his deliveries because he's the guy who takes them. McAnuff's corners are nothing to write home about really but I think we've scored quite a few, relatively speaking, from them too.

Shorey for me over Harte, but there isn't massive margins in it.

If Harte was playing for another Premier League club we'd be seeing it as a chance for our wingers to get some joy and a potential weakness in their side. Don't know who is more disbelieving that he's still playing in the top flight, himself, or anyone else who's a football follower.

No issues with Shorey. Shorey was our best and most consistent player in the first half of the season

Harte is fine. I don't see an issue there, he's never had pace.

However neither are what we currently need at this level given their age. We need to buy a good strong pacey left back in the summer and one who can come in and play now not the usual "one for a years time with a bit of work" effort we keep seeming to end up with.

As to the future, I'd offer Hartey (& Gunnarsson) coaching roles at the club and retain Shorey as cover for the new bloke.

Shorey is fine, and is a better left back (in my opinion) than Harte. Agree with Barry though - We need a new LB come the end of the season - no matter what the outcome is.

Harte can't have another season in him at Reading, can he? If we go down, he'd be an okay 3rd choice, behind Shorey and the currently imaginary new LB signing. :wink: - If we stay up - offer him a coaching role.

As to the future, I'd offer Hartey (& Gunnarsson) coaching roles at the club and retain Shorey as cover for the new bloke.


Agree with that, as consistent and stable as Shorey looked in the early season, at this level it's about pace and strength these days and that we don't really have any attacking presence from left-back is a disadvantage to us. In the system we play the full-backs can add another dimension to the attack - neither Harte nor Shorey do this.
