Someone with a better understand of football finances than I might understand how Chelsea can seemingly afford pretty much anyone at the moment. c. £250m in transfer fees alone since the summer, and they've only sold Werner of any note, for a tenth of that. Also apparently still in for Fernandez, for over £100m.

they are dishing out crazily long contracts to push the amortisation game to its limits. Wesley Fofana got a 7 year contract, Badiashile got a 7.5 year contract etc. The talk has been that they are trying to structure the Fernandez deal so that not only will he be offered a very long contract to achieve similar to above, but even the basic fee for him won't be recognised in the usual way so they can account for it even lower in annual statements

Hmm. It's a risky game. When Werner left, for example, they'd have had to realise the remaining book value of his transfer cost, which would have been three years or so and around £27m, albeit in his case offset by the £25m transfer fee. Might explain why Lukaku has only gone to Inter on loan, seen as they 'paid' nearly £100m for him only 18 months ago.

Not a transfer but Gareth Bale retires.

I thought he retired at the beginning of November.

Very risky! Utd offered long contracts and paid way over the odds for plenty of duds...Maguire, AWB, Fellaini, Jones, etc

All deadwood that was/is difficult to get rid off

Just need a body in there. Martial is the only out-and-out striker. Utd's board has been shit at transfers for a decade or so. Overpaid by about 50-60 million on the summer transfers after fooking about for so long leaving us nothing for Jan #shambles

Are Utd overpaying as they are bad at negotiating or is there a 'Man Utd Premium' that ends up being added? a kind of knock on effect for the success on and off the pitch over the last 30 years

Probably a combination of both. Plus also a "we need to make a statement that we're still a big club" factor that means they're happy to be seen to pay over the odds.

Hopefully they get him, only since the other club apparently in for Moukoko is, you'd never guess, Chelsea, again.

Bit of a coup for Southampton - they will be bringing in Jason Wilcox as Director of Football. Wilcox highly rated and was in charge of Manchester City's academy, heavily credited with bringing through a number of players into the first-team setup. Last season there were over 200 appearances made by City academy products, three-quarters of which were not Phil Foden.

Does those 200 apps include Man City academy products that were on loan at other clubs, or that may even have been sold to other clubs, last season?

Matheus Cunha's loan deal to Wolves had a clause that said the deal becomes permanent once he makes 3 (three) appearances

So having come off the bench last night Wolves have to buy him for €50M
