Recruitment team have their work cut out, even in League One.

Will they stay? Bowen's rebuild vision looks like smouldering ruins.

Can't see Brian Carey staying if we do get more windows without being able to trade properly, his role would seem pretty pointless otherwise.

On the flip side he may like the challenge of finding the best free agents available and convincing them to come to Reading.

Whilst not knowing whether he's going to get all his wages on payday.
Can't see any staff wanting to stay here if a similar offer comes along elsewhere, they may even be tempted by a slightly worse offer if it's more secure.

Clyde1998 I don't think we need to spend anything transfer fees to build a decent League One side. I don't think we're too far away from having a squad that could challenge from the play-offs right now - central midfield is the key area where we need players and at least one striker. The rest would be more about improving squad depth, as opposed to significantly strengthening the first XI.

16 clubs didn't spend a penny on transfer fees in League 1 last season. The total spend for the league was about £4.2m and Ipswich spent half of that.

Ipswich Town – £2.06m
Bolton Wanderers – £474k
Forest Green Rovers – £330k
Lincoln City – £307k
MK Dons – £254k
Cheltenham Town – £71k
Sheffield Wednesday – £50k
Barnsley – £17k

Really? A squad that very rarely has an attempt on goal, let alone one that's on target, while having a defence that's got more holes in it than a "blockbuster" Disney film plotline.

Yeah. I think we've got a decent core for this level, with a 4-2-2-2/4-4-2/4-2-4 first XI (as that's the formation Selles seems to like) looking like:

Bouzanis/CBC/Andresson
Yiadom - Holmes - Abbey/Dorsett - NGW
Hutchinson - McIntyre
Ejaria/Camara - Azeez
Carroll - Ehib/Clarke

As I said, we'll need some central-midfielders - allowing McIntyre to go back into the left-centre back position - and a striker. Once those positions are resolved, depth becomes the next issue; getting Mbengue and Hoilett renewed would help with that. That XI is probably mid-table League One, IMO; the aforementioned positions seeing signings would take us to challenging for the play-offs.

I also don't believe we should be worrying too much about how many attempts on goal we've had in recent matches. I doubt Selles will set us up to defend like Ince did. We're not 100% certain how Selles will approach matches or what players will fit his system at this stage - so there's little point in worrying about anything other than the standard of player at his disposal.

Exactly - very few clubs actually spend any money at this level, so a transfer embargo isn't going to hurt us too much.

Yeah I kind of get what you're saying really. Not much needs to be done in order to bring in a decent squad at this level, but I think to be challenging at the top you do need that flexibility to be able to spend. Obviously we have seen Sheffield Wednesday and Derby build good squads on top of what they already had to get them towards the top (and eventually up in the formers case) with freebies.

There are always some decent free agents kicking about, we do have some promising academy talents that we can now use and loans will be effective for us like a few clubs. But not having that flexibility will probably see us fall behind clubs challenging for the title and possibly even top 6. Clubs like Bolton, Portsmouth, Barnsley, Derby etc will spend "something" until they are up, whether that's Ipswich-level or not.

All this is happening without losing a few, which we will. Holmes and McIntyre won't stick around this level for too long, or if they do it's because they probably aren't good enough for the Championship.

Clyde1998 I doubt Selles will set us up to defend like Ince did.

Ince was constrained by the players at his disposal. As will Selles if he is ever actually appointed. Pre season underway and it's a shambles. Never seen any club in such a state of under preparation. Never thought it would be Reading either.

Courtney Friday is whipping up a storm on Twitter I see. Hopefully, the club will make an announcement soon.

I am not too bothered about not being able to pay a fee for new signings tbh. It’s going to be about signing some decent free agents and picking up 2 or 3 decent players on loan. We do need to get a oxf*rd move on though but we still have some decent players at this level which should help.
