Favourites and the unfavoured

by morganb » 03 Dec 2023 19:52

What is it with Selles and his sudden refusal to play Vickers?

Why does he always play Azeez?

NGW has disappeared off the face of the planet again...

Why do managers tend to favour certain players over others to the bemusement supporters? I appreciate he has a system but Vickers fall from favour happened fairly rapidly.

I can't explain Vickers, the only thing I'd say is I don't know how good of a wide player he would make, he seems to have more impact when playing centrally but he can't do worse than others out there at the moment. Elliot was non-existent, Mukairu isn't that good and Knibbs is more effective in field as well.

NGW I've never been so sold on. Dorsett has done ok at LB recently and obviously seems as if the fall out early season did no favours to his position in the squad, but similar to Mukairu, I don't know how good NGW really is. I wouldn't be sad to see him leave or anything.

Azeez was our most dangerous player today and deserved his goal in fairness. I questioned him earlier but he's beginning to influence games a bit more even though his end product is still off.

Well this is easy. Azeez is constantly involved in our creative play, never goes missing, is our top assister and has just finally started scoring.

RG30 Vickers is off in January.

Seen a few Twitter rumours to this effect, but none particularly credible.

Would love to see him develop with us, but if we get millions for him, it's a decent result too.

Well this is easy. Azeez is constantly running into trouble and losing the ball, doesn't protect his full ball, permanently gives the ball away and has just finally managed to score after missing shit loads of opportunities.

The Athletic article from a month or two ago did say that some January transfers had basically already been agreed due to the financial situation. So it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Vickers is one of those.

And fair play if it is - it would be better for the lads career to be at a more stable club (though he is unlikely to have had any first team football at all at a "normal" club) and the club pocket much needed money. It is what the Academy is meant to before and the lower we drop will only hasten the sales and lower the size of any fee.

I think if we were to sell Vickers for a decent fee, future clauses and sell on % to another club and then take him back on loan for the remainder of the season with Ballard going back to Southampton, that would be a good bit of business for us. I'm not sure how much we would get for him though, depends which clubs come in for him. A lower PL club/Championship club with parachute payments (i.e. Palace or Southampton), it could be seven figures.

It's a sad situation really. We should be a Championship club looking to blood him in and enjoy his performances for 2 - 3 years before getting a 7 figure fee.

Instead £1m + a good sell on in January would be great business; we may not even get that. And this a local boy who supports the club too, it would be a real shame.

Nah, I'm not interested in taking him back to develop him for someone else when we could be developing someone who'll fetch money or be here longer term.

He's not Hector, or Olise where he's gonna be one of the first names on the team sheet.

I would be amazed if we got £1m for Vickers, or even close to it.

In fact, I need to find a word for amazed that means 'double-amazed'. I personally think there is more chance we sign Pele's reanimated corpse than that we get seven figures for Vickers.

Didn't City pay us £1m for a 16 year old without a single senior appearance? Or was it more realistically a maximum of £1m after add-ons?

So then there is less harm taking him back for half a season as he wouldn't be playing/developing. Bring him back to help with our squad depth for the rest of the season, we are a bit thin on the ground for decent creative players in our squad, Vickers gives us that.

Luca Fletcher? Fair - albeit Fletcher is already in the England setup and has been watched by a number of top clubs in Europe. Always too early to know I guess, but his ceiling is likely much higher than Vickers'.

Hate SeLLLes and want him out.

But tbf I think he got it right with Azeez and I liked him for dropping the Holmes/TMac pairing of doom.

BUt the bizarre leaving out of Ehib so many times and now VIckers I don't know.

I guess he's the top man and he gets to make these decision as it's his nuts on the line.

We judge him on results and on that basis he won't be here much longer anyway.
