Sanguine I hadn't previously understood the small absurdity in UEFA's 'homegrown' rule for European competition squads. Clubs must choose eight such 'homegrown' players, which is defined as a player having played or been trained by a club in the same national association for three years from the age of 15. What this means is that young players don't count as 'homegrown'.

Practical example - Chiesa missed out on Liverpool's CL squad, Rio Ngumoha taking the final place. Ngumoha was born in Newham, but isn't 'homegrown' because he simply isn't old enough to have played for three years in England. Whereas a 19 year old Brazilian who moved to England at 16 would count as 'homegrown'.

Ngumoha isn't homegrown as he has only been at Liverpool for 12 months. 16 year olds only need 2 years 'without interruption' to be classed as homegrown.

apparently when you submit your 25 man squad to UEFA you also get to submit a B List which contains anyone young enough not to be able to meet the homegrown rule because of age, and so those players just need 2 years uninterrupted at that club. That B List is limitless, so if you have a young talent good enough to make it onto your B List who will get game time you are effectively having more than 25 players in your European squad

And Liverpool have 2 names on their B list - Jayden Danns and Trey Nyoni.

It really is a ludicrous rule though, no doubt created solely to accommodate (and to some extent help encourage) big sides to vacuum up all the young talented youngsters from the UK & Europe's "diddier" clubs as soon as possible

IIRC Welsh players are classed as homegrown as far as Premier League rules are concerned, but for UEFA competitions they are not classed homegrown for English clubs, because the Welsh FA exists

RG30 I am in Lisbon for the opening week of the UCL group stage fixtures for work (ironically conference I attending is at Benfica's stadium) so hoping they can reach the group stage which will mean them or Sporting Lisbon will be at home when I am in town and the plan is to attend.

Benfica vs Qarabag on the Tuesday & Sporting Lisbon vs Kairat Almaty on the Thursday. Unfortunately Benfica being arseholes about not having a membership while Sporting are yet to release any ticket information. Unless I can get in the away end then it will be a viagogo job or I'll just swerve.

Managed to get a ticket for Benfica last night who stacked a 2 goal lead to lose 3-2 to Qarabag which was a huge shock and left the locals fuming and calling for Bruno Lage’s resignation.

Nice ground, easily accessible on the metro and clearly what Arsenal modelled the Emirates Stadium off.

They may get their wish, reports that Mourinho is poised to take over at Benfica.

First victory in the CL proper by an Azerbaijani team.

Crazy game in Italy, where Juventus scored twice deep in injury time to draw 4-4 with Dortmund. Equaliser scored by former Newcastle and Bournemouth left back Lloyd Kelly.

Shock in Netherlands too, where PSV lost 3-1 at home to Union Saint-Gilloise.

Goalkeeper Jan Oblak will play his 500th game for Atletico Madrid tonight, at Anfield.

And so he returns to where he began managing 25 years ago.

Real Madrid scraped the win last night against Marseille, but their right back options imploded. TAA pulled a hamstring and will miss a few weeks - and potentially the trip to Anfield at the start of November. And Dani Carvajal will miss three games after being sent off for a headbutt.

Some shocking defending from Benfica.
