roberto_11 Most gutted would have to be Shaka, Osborn and Taylor all going in the same summer right after we came so so close to the Prem. Since then there have been a few (Lovell, Curo, Caskey, Adie...twice) but the most recent would be Butler, as in effect we had replaced him with Shaun Goater, who I never wanted us to sign in the 1st place.

Most pleased when he left would be Hughsey. He was versatile, worked hard and had one good season for us, but on the whole was absolutely shite, and in his last season crossed it into the stand more times than i dare to remember without getting angry again. I was surprised and ecstatic we got £500,000 for him.

Thanks for dragging this subject up again bakerlou with so many of the posters no longer active-Spacey found time to criticise other people's spellings reminding me of how much (not) he is missed.

My feelings were much in line with those of roberto regarding the good and the bad and I think Osborn going to QPR was the one that disappointed me most both then and since.

Losing Steve Wood and Kevin Bremner was the worst esp. as they were replaced by the likes of Paul Franklin and Francis Joseph. A clear sign to every supporter that the club was potless and/or still had plenty of Walleresque ambition.

Had forgotten about Steve Wood.
But for injuries he could well have succeeded at the top level IMHO.

In the cases of Osborn and Wood their injury periods came AFTER leaving Reading whereas nowadays..........................................................

Gordons Cumming Les Chappell.

To or from Rotherham? I can't remember :oops:

Doncaster. Dick Habbin went to Rotherham.

Was totally gutted when Simon Osborn left. Going back a bit further, Tommy Jenkins.

I was actually quite gutted that Josh Laurent left us, i felt he was a really strong player and we stood a reasonable chance of keeping him. The same with Tom Ince and Adrian Marriappa too. Obviously gutted that we lost Olise and Richards, but they were right at the very start of their careers and have the talent to get right to the top so i don't feel like there was any chance of them ever really staying.

As with my earlier post Tommy Jenkins like Osborn and Wood never fulfilled expectations because of injury problems.
A very exciting player to watch in his short time with us.
Those were the days when players got injured after leaving Reading, not like today when it happens soon after they join us.

Not a player but convinced we'd have had a play-off campaign had Selles stayed.

Yeah was pretty gutted when he left. A real low ebb

Can’t think of anyone much in recent times which weren’t an inevitably so got used to it long before it happened. Laurent isn’t a bad shout. Mbengue from this season

Players from the past couple of seasons were so popular and had such a great connection with the fans that it was sad when a lot of them left.

Mbengue is a great example - they already absolutely love him at QPR and I think if he has a good couple of seasons there he has the capacity to move into the Prem. He is just so relentlessly positive and I think his influence over the team and as a conduit to the fans is so important.

I perhaps get a bit overly attached to good goalkeepers. Most of my ‘gutted they’re leaving’ moments have been over them.

Hahnemann, Federici, McCarthy, so the last one that was a real a gut wrench was Ali Al-Habsi. Helps he was an affable chap too.

I still think all four parties would have been better off wlif we'd sold Doyle to Stoke instead of Kitson, and we'd probably have gone back up.

Absolutely gutted when he left.

Most recently, well, so many to choose from. Gutted when all of Bindon, Mbengue and Craig left in the summer.

probably sidwell. If he had stayed we would have stayed up that year, we might have established ourselves as a premier league team.

Gylfi, obviously. Then I'd add ShLong, Doyle. Going back I'd say Cureton, Fozzy and then perhaps even Caskey from around that period. Perhaps you could even add Parky, remember him scoring in front of the home goal towards the end of his time, the whole stadium went absolutely nuts.

The last player - without any doubt in my mind - Harvey Knibbs.

Given the way we play, he was a monumental loss. His turnover rates were the highest in the league last season - obviously he chipped in with a fair few goals/ assists too.

The way we play 'second ball' football means we need a Knibbs in our team - even watching him for the last 30 mins on the tv vs Derby last night - he won so many balls back.

Huge loss.

...was going to add Gylfi & Darius (with a z) .... both far higher quality than we'd been used to and gave us that factor that made a difference ... agree with most that has gone before too - with 'Sonkimarsson' & Brynjar also leaving unfillable voids from that 05/06 miracle side.

... tho Henderson (obvs nowhere near the same impact) was a real trier with what ability he had -
I remember that brace in the late 'comeback' win at the 'Posh' all those years ago (2001) .
Given the slightly unkind tag of 'Forrest' due to his unconventional running style. I also had a vague recollection of a couple of games or more at the M'stad, when he'd come on as a late sub for Nicky F. who'd done all BUT score and run himself to a standstill
- only for "big bad Darius", to immediately grab a goal out of nothing. :lol:
Pretty sure it may have spawned the occasional North Stand call of 'Bring on The Messiah' ! :D

Others, back in the day that I was sad to see go or pack in, Mick Kearney, (super) Kevin Bremner, Kevin Watson, Jem, Doyler and Long.
Thought Sean Morrison was big loss too and couldn't rightly understand the reasoning at the time - was that another tax bill issue?? :?

More recently - tho' inevitable they'd part company with our ownership/finances - Bindon, Mbengue and before that Femi.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My mate ever present thru the 70s, would probably list a raft of other names & being ever the obtuse, might claim to miss - Keith Knight
- whose goal to games ratio in the v.late 80s was quite stunning for a brief period.
Not that sure why he'd lament his move away tho' .... as I'm also pretty certain he owed him a Tenner!
