OUT - clashes with my work Christmas party. Shame as I've been present at both the R1 & R2 matches.

I'm in, fwiw. At least it appears we're heading for more milder temperatures than we've had over the past week or so...

A reminder of the big round 3 match against Middlesbrough on Wednesday KO 7pm. Hopefully a decent crowd will turn up to support the U 18’s. We drew 1-1 in the league on Saturday whereas the Boro didn’t have a match

tbf the official site had been much quicker off the mark this time ..... :?

https://www.readingfc.co.uk/news/2025/december/03/royals-into-round-four-of-youth-cup-after-dramatic-penalty-shootout/

My take was we rather got away with that one ... our 'game management' as per the popular buzz-phrase , was poor in a tie we really should have been well clear in by FT ... and again in the added on 30'. Boro really didn't show that much until driven by desperation.

Their first goal was a top-drawer effort but we stood too far off the scorer.

Looked as if we tried to run the clock down far too early in the 2nd Period of ET, when boro looked out of it .... and then compounded it at the death by doing it so badly!

In normal time: thought our 3 5 6 & 8 were the stand outs - the big no 9 (F-T) caused havoc when he ran at them (very Kelv. E-like) and 'created' the panic that led to the "Comedy OG"

Sadly he then spurned two really well worked chances to win it very late : the 2nd one on 90 plus, a tame scuff that the keeper fell on - where a simple 'eyes shut blast' might have been more rewarding? 8)

Could hear the bench trying to get him to use his left foot more - since he was playing that side.

We did have some very bright looking subs in ET and the back four picked up the slack that showed occasionally in normal time.

I thought we typically controlled the game without really being too threatening; didn't help that the front four all seemed to be in the wrong positions like in the last round.

Agree with the first goal: far too much space for him to get a shot away. Going five at the back with at least ten minutes to go was always going to allow Middlesbrough chances to score.

I thought Fuller-Thompson was a bit underwhelming tonight, but he was often out on the left (especially in the second half) - seemed to always want to shoot or run with the ball, instead of passing to someone who was in a better position than him. He did cause the confusion for our first goal though.

The second goal for us came by pushing Booth higher up the pitch, which allowed him to get possession between the lines and free of their defenders.

Don't quite know why we often played long balls towards our striker, when no-one who played there throughout the game had the height to compete with their centre-backs for it.

The Middlesbrough #9 (Ibeh) appeared on the bench for them against Coventry, but didn't really do anything before going off injured in the first half. As pointed out, Middlesbrough didn't really do much throughout the entire game until we decided to sit back after taking the lead in extra-time.

Also thought Borgnis was off his line for both his penalty saves.

All that matters is we got through the tie and are into the fourth round.

When is the draw?

And when could we expect a video stream of the games on RoyalTV - or do they avoid that at all costs to try and get punters through the turnstiles?

I always though FAYC games had to be held in the first team stadium. Doesn't appear to be the case going on that list.

Hopefully Reading will put up a highlights video over the next few days.
I thought the coverage on X was excellent last night apart from one small gripe. I was expecting it to be on the Academy X page not the main club page !

But then the main club X page would presumably get a higher “footfall” than the X Academy page so that makes some sense.
