Any man who attempted to enter Geoff is pretty heroic, in my eyes.

The pronunciation of Reading as 'Red-ing' provides a clue to its Saxon origins. Historians believe its name links to a group or tribe of early Saxons, the Rēadingas in Old English, who settled here in the 500s AD. So, it probably means 'Reada’s people'. It has been suggested the name Reada means ‘the red one’.

Fair dos, I mis remembered Saxons as Vikings - but the date (c 1,500 years ago) and Red Haired one are legit - so I'm still miffed

The first battle of Reading occurred just after the Battle of Englefield and exactly 1000 years before the club was founded (just for reference the second battle was in 1688). In 871 a force of Danish Vikings led by led by a couple of chaps called Bagsecg and Halfdan Ragnarsson defeated a West Saxon force led by Aethelred and his brother Alfred (later the Great). The Saxons went on to defeat the Vikings (4-0 in a third replay).

The battle is thought to have taken place near the confluence of the River Thames and River Kennet which these days I think is somewhere round Cemetery Junction near the BIG Tesco.

Reading was a Saxon settlement and probably should be pronounced Reading as in what you do to a book (if you still use them).

I have an old map embedded in a coffee table that spells Reading as “Redding”. Do with that what you will.

Wasn't sure where to put this.
Last week we were in Lanzarote and casually looking at stuff on facebook under a dazzling sun I saw something about the Barnsley game being Louisiana day.

Tell me this is a joke right or was I just imagining it?

No joke (except that you can only "Taste the best flavours of Louisiana" in Hospitality):

There are some fireworks, a band signing, American cars, fotspot (?), playlists, enhanced Fun Zone - all the things you'd automatically associate with Louisiana

So the game will be postponed due to high winds then

So, after the fireworks (Couhig said "because I like them") we now have further proof that our club is now the plaything of a Yank rather than a club representing a town in England.
Why not a celebration of Whitley or Tilehurst or even Wokingham or Thatcham where so many of the supporters come from?

Call me old fashioned (which would probably be correct) but what has this to do with football and with Reading?

Rumours that Katrina And The Waves are playing at Louisiana day have not been confirmed.

A slap in the face for the Texas and Arkansas Royals.
