I was in the Upper tier, right in front of the tackle, so had a decent view. As soon as he did it, I knew he was off, stupid cynical tackle in a position where it didn't need it. Silly boy.

Like TB says it was a pointless and stupid tackle.

In terms of intent I think it really refers to 'did the player mean to launch into a tackle' not did that tackle mean to go for the ball or the player. I've not re-read the laws to check that, but I think thats how it is applied. With that in mind you can't try to say that any dangerous tackle like that is accidently unless the player has no control over his body!

A correct red card, and it's a massive blow to be losing Long for the next few games (never thought I'd be saying that!!!).

Just read an article on GetReading saying how he lost his temper in the changing rooms by kicking bottles around. How many chances does he need to get his fecking act together. Liverpool he threw his shirt on the floor, Burnley he lashes out at the corner flag  , Derby he gets sent off in a revenge style tackle and now this shite.

I don't mind a player being angry with himself for being sent off (if that was in fact it). I was at the Liverpool game, and Skrtel was hanging off his back all game, so it's no wonder he was pissed off with the officials.

As others have said the shame of it all is that he has even started at long last to look a bit like a footballer.
The other shame is that in Rasiak,Church,Mooney,Thor and Bignull we have numbers but nothing much better than 3rd division ability.
I feel sure that his stupidity is going to cost us.

He's like a child though. Really really petulant. You see it in his game all the time. Loses the ball and dives into a revenge tackle, or goes in hard with his shoulder. Pretends to throw the ball at the opposition if he doesn't get the throw he wants...

He simply can't do that. Defenders will deliberately wind him up, because he can't cope with it.

I don't mind him being angry with himself for such a stupid thing. I was angry enough with him...which reminds me, why were people cheering his name and clapping him off when he just looked like costing us a great chance of making RCC history?

I don't think there is any excuse for him getting wound up by a bit of a physical battle with a centre half though, that's what the games about. Dealing with the physical battle is a massive part of playing upfront or at the back. If you can't handle that then you've no place as a professional footballer.

I couldn't agree more with this post.

It sums up Long's lack of intelligence and his arrogance that he'd even make such a stupid challenge, which could effect the club more than it effects him.

Ideal Long-bashers are out in force.
What a shame that there are people willing to lash out like this.
I understand why they would be disappointed, with Long out it lessens our chance of winning.
This doesn't mean Long is suddenly a bad player, a bad person.
These things happen. Get over it.

Short or selective memories i think.

The points made were to show how stupid he is. He's starting to show the potential he's got and winning games for us. He then shows he still a fecking idiot by letting his emotions get the better of him for the third/fourth time in a situation were we need him the most. Most normal people learn from their mistakes the first time not 3 or 4 fecking attempts. Now, we have to replace him in some important games with strikers who haven't been on any sort of form. yes, I know church scored but he got lucky the ball was parried in his direction after a woeful first attempt.

Not suddenly a bad player no, it's nothing new!!!

He's let the club down with a tackle he shouldn't make. He shouldn't be applauded and his actions condoned, in much the same way that his failings as a player shouldn't be overlooked just because he's the player in form and was in possession of the shirt.

Fair play Shane. You look a totally different player to the one who started this season and has played at any point for us (other than the last few months of last season).

How about you start next season like this and stop dicking us all about?

Two tap-ins can't disguise the fact that he was woeful today. Shame on you Shane Long, shame on you and your lack of effort.

What is it with Long and the second part of the season? Conversely to Doyle who always starts off a campaign like a train only to fizzle out after Christmas.

Long on the other hand, always seems to start a season absolutely atrociously it looks like he's blown his last chance, looks overwieght, petulant, crap and a sheer waste of space to now looking lean, fast, a handful for anyone, and capable of scoring goals. Against a very good side today as well. Right place right time for the header, which granted was easy, the 2nd one was just a lovely goal. Great play by Kebe, perfect pull back and Long just tucked it away with ease.

I thought Long had blown it this year, if he didn't make it this year when he was and is the main man up front then that was it, the transformation in him since Christmas has been incredible. Much like towards the back end of last year when his goals kept Reading in the hunt at the top of the league.

Strange one.
