Judging from McDermott's comments today it looks like we may have done what I expected and abandoned thoughts of a loan signing after getting a good result. They ought to make a definitive decision one way or the other. At the moment it looks like we step up our search if we have a bad result and then reduce our efforts if we get a good result.

In my view we do need another goalscoring threat despite last weeks results so I am hoping that the money saved by not bringing in a loan player will increase the amount available for a permanent purchase in January.

A top two place seems extremely optimistic at the moment so maybe the aim is to hang in there in and around the play off areas and hope any transfer movement we make in January is more effective than our rivals.

"My philosophy is always the same, I don't want to bring a loan player in just for a month and then he goes back. I don't think that's right for the club and the make-up of our club, it's wrong. When I brought Griffin and Khizanishvili in I felt we had a chance of long-term deals. If I had injury it's different but I wouldn't want to just bring someone in."

Asked specifically whether he tried to bring in somebody last week, and if there was any truth in rumours linking us with Leon Best of Newcastle, Brian said, "No and no."

That will be the end of this thread (thankfully)

Little bit disappointing, say, two of our strikers pick up niggles (because it is a possibility) - where does that leave us?

Brian clearly states he'd look for a replacement if there were injuries in the squad, there aren't so there isn't any need to replace at this moment.

Exactly, no need to be disappointed that Best is not on the radar, we are after a 'gem' (whoever that may be)

Elmer Park, if you look at the whole interview he says the result on Saturday doesn't change anything and they are continuing to look to strengthen up front but want someone who is going to be something different and a real star at this level. He actually specifically addresses and disproves your concern that because we scored four on Saturday they'll just stick with what we have.

Daily Star says Pardew will be selling Best in January.

Worth a punt?

Had a forgettable year with Newcastle but enjoed some success at Coventry so can cut in the Championship.

Having been injured for a lengthy spell he might be available for a knock down price. Probably cost too much for us though...

Whilst I agree with Barry that the most likely final outcome of the January window is that the Club will show masterful inactivity apart from the virtually done deal for Leigertwood, I do think they will be looking at players like Best, particularly if if is true that we enquired before. I think he could be worth a punt if the price is right despite the fact that I know he isn't the world class thirty goal a season striker which we all would like but that isn't going to happen.

In the end though I am afraid I am doubtful we would be offering the wages to be successful in signing a player that has other options as I suspect Best would have, not least maybe a return to Coventry.

Ah come on Barry not true that !! if we can find a goaslscoring striker that,

1. Wont cost anything
2. Doesn't want any wages
3. Will pay all his expenses out of his own pocket

That would be too much for Mr Mad to turn down !!.

I think a lot depends on whether wereally want to take a punt at the top 2/6 this season

If so, a million or a bit more in January and we'll have a real, serious chance

Or the club could settle for 6-7-8-9th, get two players in the summer and really go for it next year (departures complicating things)
