I distinctly recall 'Who shot J.R.?' being the headline on the BBC news one night.
I remember that night distinctly.
I drove home from a Reading game and had a blinding headache.
As soon as I got indoors I had a phone call from a mate's wife to say that the mate had gone looking for a bloke she had been having an affair with and she was afraid that he would kill him and then come back and maybe do the same to her.

There wasn't enough in my opinion to get the police involved so I drove the extra 10 miles to their house and sat and waited with her, that is we waited and waited and...eventually at about midnight a car pulled up so I went to the door.
"Hello Dave, what are you doing here?" john said in his normal placid tone.
"I'm here to stop you murdering Sandra".
"Don't think that's going to happen mate"
"Good"
" Let's have a drink"

About 2 hours later and after a few scotches and deep conversations with both of them I left, with more of a headache and way over the limit, content that murder would not take place.
He hadn't murdered the other bloke either but had spent the time driving around to clear his head.

When I got in the missus just said that she thought John wasn't the murdering type so she hadn't been worried.
I never got to see JR get shot.

BTW, Sandra went off with the fella and it only lasted a few months and she has spent the last however many years it is as a singleton now living in a one-bedroomed flat struggling to make ends meet.
He meanwhile married another woman and has lived happily ever after, with one lovely daughter from the marriage and two lovely grandchildren.

There was a bit of deja vu in that about 3 years after the first incident I became a hired protector again when the new (now wife) woman's ex came after John in a crazy car chase (including driving the wrong way down a one-way street) and had threatened to do everything to him if he caught up with him-I spent another 3 hours or so, as before, waiting for this ex's arrival but it never happened.
On their wedding day I was best man and by then a restraining order had been applied but it still felt a bit edgy until the day had finished.
The irony of all this is that John is one of the quietest and good natured of people and the last person you would expect to attract these dramatic events.

So the discussion is still going about American television shows? Nice to see the internet is continuing to function properly. :D

I don't know about others but I forget the moniker that I use-on here I may well come across as being like him (miserable and moaning old git) but away from here I would suggest that other people might not see me that way.

No, although at the time I would have-she was at it with a bloke from work.

I may be a David but not David Mellor who specialised in that sort of thing.
