CONFIRMED SIGNING: Zac Berry

by maffff » 16 May 2013 09:44

Talented Siddington eight-year-old has been snapped up by Premeirship club

ZAC BERRY has signed for Premiership club Reading after starring for Cirencester Town over the past two seasons. Zac is eight years old.

The pupil at Powells School in Cirencester had also been offered contracts by both Swindon Town and Bristol City but has opted for Reading after spending two years at their Development Centre.

Left-footer Zac, who regularly scores four or five goals a game, has played his last match for Cirencester Town, for whom he picked up the U8s Player of the Year award recently.

Next season he will be required to train three times a week at Reading in addition to playing Sunday matches.

"Zac was first spotted a couple of years ago playing in a six-a-side tournament in Highworth by Nick Bolton, who is the Reading FC Academy Foundation Coach and Area Head Scout in Swindon," said Zak's dad Marc.

"Zac was among some 100 boys who went to Nick's Development Centre and they were filtered down to about 20 who have gone on to train at Reading twice a week and play against the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal.

"He became old enough to sign a contract with Reading for the first time in April and will play for their U9 Academy next season."

A Liverpool supporter, whose favourite player is Steven Gerrard, Zac dreams of playing professional football.

"Zac already knows about the sacrifices that have to be made because when he could be playing with his mates after school, he leaves to go training," said Marc.

Zac is not the only member of the Siddington-based Berry family with an eye on a professional football career. His two-year younger brother Jimmy has followed the same path to the Reading FC Development Centre in Swindon.

Why wasn't he a starter in the Prem this season-4 or 5 goals a game better than Robin Van P.

I know we have also had a fairly large influx of youth players from the Protec academy in London recently with several more on trial/signed up for trials in the near future. But they have players sign for other teams too.

Is the Oxford one Abingdon?

The "golden age" in youth development is 7 or 8 - if you can get a player at that age you can, apparently, turn them into a properly trained footballer, with none of the bad habits that other kids might pick up from poor outside coaching or playing too many games, etc.

And under EPPP the old "travel time to club" rule has gone, so looks like we're taking advantage of this.

Can only be a good thing - the odds are that he won't make it all the way to the first team, but it's encouraging to see us able to attract the best young kids.

It's a self-reinforcing thing - parents see the products of a club's academy getting games and doing well, so they sign their kids up there as well, and so the best academies get the best kids and so get better and better.

It's interesting that he's a left footer, although the fact that he's eight years old might mean we have to re-sign Ian Harte for the time being.

Went to school with his older brothers Straw and Goose. Very fruity family. They told me that Zac is useless but that might just be sour grapes.

No, it's in Oxford - next to the Oxford City FC stadium; brand new facility opened a year ago or so. Reading and Southampton are the two big players when it comes to scouting in Oxford - Oxford United are strangely almost invisible ...

Obita's from Oxford isn't he, and Pearce is from Oxfordshire.
Guess we can't really complain when the likes of Liam Bridcutt upgrade from Reading.
