Stranded If Wales beat Israel on Sunday, we are guaranteed a thread asking how on earth they came to be ranked 4th in the world in the October rankings.

BBC also mentioning that if that results combines with Germany losing they could climb as high as second.

Better way of looking at it is 'Wales have the 9th best set of collective results during the last 2 years' (or whatever the qualifying period is).

Admittedly that only makes sense until you actually look at their fixtures during that time, when their best 3 results have been a win and two draws against Belgium. But that just means other teams have had worse results.

Wondering if, from a rankings perspective, we actually suffer for having qualified for the World Cup and then been shit at it.

I think we suffer because of the cost of constructing Wembley and the greed of the English FA trying to milk the public with unnecessary friendlies with high profile countries to pay for the overspend.

It's probably a mixture of the two.

Also, anything from Uruguay in 18th to Portugal in 6th is much of a muchness. A couple of big wins or big losses and you'll go up a relatively large # of places.

Just got the website up and the impact fades, so its results over 4 years and scaled by 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 in the second, third and fourth years. Eyeballing it, Wales have by far and away the best score in 2015.

Where would Wales be though without Bale or Ramsey though?

Probably rubbish again.

double d I don't understand how Romania have gotten so high up the rankings? Can't recall them being in a major tournament for donkeys years or beating anybody of note?

I have just read something saying they hired a consultant/analyst to work out how best to play the ranking system.

Gordon Strachan has been doing a great job apparently, creating a club like atmosphere. Shame the club is Stirling Albion.

They are very valid points you make. When you see the salaries of the manager and the players, no other countries come close. Wasn't Yocham Lurrrrrvvvvve the German manager and their players on less than half the money of what the Capello and Beckham circle of chums were on?

GTFI Luxembourg beat Macedonia and get off the bottom of the table. Must admit I didn't go last night, been a bit let down recently. Fickle.

ps. Wales top their Group having scored just nine goals in seven games, a Group including Andorra ffs. Only Andorra have scored fewer goals than Wales in that Group of 6.

Actually very nearly went to the game but decided to have another pint and watched the second half in the hotel.

Just a draw for Wales but they only realistically need one point now and finish at home to Andorra, so even they shouldn't be able to screw up from here.

Brosef Stalin The current Irish squad is complete dogshit.

Only player that would challenge for a spot on England team would be Coleman

Hasn't that more or less been the case for fifteen years or more? Wouldn't have picked Robbie Keane ahead of Rooney or Owen. Damien Duff could have played on England's left wing, and of course Roy Keane would have had a chance, but it's been a long time since they had three or four players who looked like potential England internationals.

That almost goes without saying seeing as loads of them would've been playing for England if they were good enough. Instead they realised they wouldn't and played for the B team instead.

The FIFA ranking system is perfectly logical.

You get points for every game that you play, over a rolling period. You can get more points for more important games. You can get more points for games against better teams.

If Wales look in a 'false position' it is because other teams have had worse results than them over the qualifying period.
