Best RFC centre back of all time part 1

by SpaceCruiser » 06 Jun 2007 15:08

Here's the vote, choose your fave CB! Run down is thus:

Dariusz Wdowcyzk

Classy Polish defender brought to Reading on a free from Celtic in 1994 by Mark McGhee for the new season where Reading were back in the second tier. Added quite a lot to the Reading defence and formed a good partnership with Adrian Williams which saw them finish second behind Middlesbrough and played in the unfortunate defeat at Wembley at the end of the season. The following two seasons were interrupted with injuries and disagreements with Jimmy Quinn and he finally retired. Fondly remembered by most Reading fans for his classy displays.

Keith McPherson

Arrived at Reading in 1990, from Northampton, to play for Ian Porterfield's Reading. He was a solid dependable defender, captained Reading to the Division Two championship triumph in the 1993/4 season, played as part of a three man defence with Wdowcyzk and Williams in the playoff final the following season. After that continued to serve Reading loyally before moving to Brighton on a free in 1999 (I think).

Ibrahima Sonko

Brought to Reading in the summer of 2004 by Steve Coppell as a green defender from Brentford that nobody gave much of a chance. His chance came, however, when Adrian Williams left and his steadily growing confidence helped to cement his place in the team. The following season saw him play through small knocks and even turned down a chance to play for Senegal at the African Nations Cup to help Reading win the Championship, breaking records along the win. Eventually got nicknamed "Superman" by Reading fans for his heroic displays. Played a large part in Reading's first season in the Premiership before sadly seeing out the remainder of the season with injury.

Linvoy Primus

Terry Bullivant brought him and Lee Hodges to Reading as his first signings - I think the fee was in the region of £700 for the pair. Linvoy established himself as a rock in the heart of defence along aside Keith McPherson, but unfortunately could do nothing about Reading's eventual relegation to the third tier. Played the next two seasons as Reading's best player and Alan Pardew tried to keep him by offering a good contract but Linvoy thought he could do better and went off to Portsmouth.

Adrian Williams

Local boy who came through the youth ranks and established himself as a confident and assured defender, although he had played all over the park. After a great season in 1993/4, he won a cap with Wales and went off to Wolves at the end of 1994/5 season. Spent a couple of fruitless years there and Alan Pardew was persuaded to bring him back on loan and eventually signed him permanently. He played in the playoff final at Wembley and the one at Cardiff. Left a season before Reading did their record breaking championship winning season because he wasn't happy that he wasn't offered a new contract.

Keith Curle

Ian Branfoot bought Curle to the club (from where and for how much, I can't remember) in 1987/8 as a replacement for Steve Wood and he was a quick defender. Played in the Simod Cup final. Left for Wimbledon after the following season, with Reading receiving £500,000.

Martin Hicks

Holder of record appearances for Reading (500), he played for Reading for most of his career, winning Division 4 championship, Division Three championship and the Simod Cup. A towering defender who won a lot of balls in the air. Released by Mark McGhee, I think.

Ivar Ingimarsson

In the 2003/4 season, new manager Steve Coppell needed a new defender and brought in Icelandic defender Ingimarsson from Wolves. Dependable defender and was part of the record breaking Championship winning squad. Played every single minute of the first ever Premiership campaign.

Presumably the 7 "losers" will go into a separate poll for the second CB slot?

Yes, and if any of the losers record very few votes, may go out completely. Depends on whether any others get a few nominations on the debate thread.

Not sure you should remove any of the above on that basis - look at the landslide on the LB poll...

I know what you mean. Like I said, we'll see and I'll make a decision tomorrow.

Steve Hetzke - now there was someone who could play anywhere, and his warm up always ended with a ridiculously high skip.

Sorry, nearly forgot - Upson

Dariusz Wdowcyzk...how did we ever manage to sign him anyway? He was far too good for us at the time.
